Job summary

Flathead Valley Community College in Kalispell, MT is seeking a part-time Work Study student to support the Career Services office. The role offers a flexible schedule Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., up to 19 hours per week, beginning August 25, 2026.

You will assist with resume/cover-letter drop-ins, draft outreach emails, help with employer outreach and event logistics, and perform routine office tasks while gaining hands-on experience in a professional college setting.

Qualifications

  • Must be Work Study eligible as determined by FVCC Financial Aid.
  • Current FVCC student in good academic standing (minimum 2.0 GPA).
  • Interest in helping fellow students with careers, job search, or student services and promoting resources.
  • Cooperative spirit; able to work with students, alumni, supervisors, employers, and the public; honor confidentiality.
  • Basic computer skills (email, word processing, simple spreadsheets) and willingness to learn office software.
  • Clear, professional verbal and written communication; comfortable interacting with diverse people.
  • Reliable, organized, ability to problem-solve and follow directions.

Responsibilities

  • Promote career events, job fairs, student opportunities, and career services resources through various channels (email, flyers, classroom visits, tabling, social media).
  • Assist with the initial quick resume/cover letter drop-ins and appointments under supervision.
  • Assist with employer and campus partner outreach tasks; update contact lists and draft initial emails for supervisor review.
  • Maintain and update outreach lists and track engagement in basic Google spreadsheets or office tools.
  • Staff information tables in high-traffic areas and direct students to appointments or online resources.
  • Support event logistics: sign-in sheets, name tags, hospitality, technology setup checks, and post-event surveys.
  • Handle routine office tasks: bulletin boards, copying, scanning, filing, ordering supplies.
  • Greet students and visitors and refer them to appropriate staff or resources.

DEPARTMENT AND LOCATION OF JOB:

LENGTH OF EMPLOYMENT:

Academic Calendar Year 2025/2026

PAY RANGE:

$14.00 to $15.00 per hour depending on experience

WORK SCHEDULE:

Flexible schedule between Monday and Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. May work up to 19 hours per week.

DRESS CODE:

Casual wear with appropriate coverage.

POSITION PURPOSE/ROLE:

Support the Career Services office by providing student, alumni, and community member assistance, administrative support, event support, and outreach for career-related programs, while gaining hands‑on experience in a professional office setting.

POSITION DUTIES:
  • Promote career events, job fairs, student opportunities, and career services resources through variety of means to potentially include email, flyers (using Canva graphics & Google Docs), accompanying the FVCC Career Advisor on classroom visits, tabling, possibly taking video for social media, etc.
  • Under general supervision of the Career Advisor, assist with the initial quick resume/cover letter drop-ins and appointments (e.g., checking for basics, formatting, and directing students to guides or appointments; not replacing professional review).
  • Assist with employer and campus partner outreach tasks, such as updating contact lists, drafting initial emails for supervisor review and approval, and collecting job posting details for staff review. (May be using Handshake.)
  • Maintain and update outreach lists and track engagement in basic Google spreadsheets or office tools.
  • Staff information tables in high-traffic areas, answering basic questions and directing students to appointments, online resources, or events.
  • Support event logistics: sign‑in sheets, name tags, hospitality, technology set‑up checks, and post‑event surveys. Help with event prep and day‑of support (set‑up, check‑in, wayfinding, collecting surveys, tabling).
  • Handle routine office tasks such as maintaining bulletin boards and job posting boards, copying, scanning, filing, ordering, and/or organizing supplies. Doing basic research.
  • G reet students and visitors, answer basic questions about career services, and refer them to appropriate staff or resources (e.g., Handshake, resume template, workshops).
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Current community college student in good academic standing (e.g., minimum 2.0 GPA).
  • Eligible for Federal work‑study as determined by Financial Aid.
  • Interest in helping fellow students with careers, job search, or student services and promoting resources.
  • Possesses a cooperative spirit in working with students, alumni, supervisors, employers, and the public. Comfortable communicating in person, by phone, and in writing. Honor confidentiality.
  • Basic computer skills (email, word processing, simple spreadsheets; comfort learning office software and career platforms).
  • Clear, professional verbal and written communication skills; comfortable interacting with an array of students, staff, and employers.
  • Reliable, organized, ability to problem‑solve, and follow directions and procedures.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS (optional)
  • Experience in customer service, campus clubs, or peer/student leadership.
  • Familiarity with LinkedIn, resume writing, or job search tools, or willingness to learn quickly
  • Comfort with simple design tools (e.g., Canva, Google Docs) for outreach materials.
  • Familiarity with social media.
STUDENT SKILL DEVELOPMENT:
  • Customer service: working with students and staff.
  • Professional communication: drafting emails/messages and speaking with employers and staff.
  • Office and administrative skills: scheduling, data entry, filing, use of Word/Excel/online platforms, handling confidential information.
  • Career development literacy: understanding resumes, cover letters, job search strategies, interview preparation, and use of career technologies.
  • Event coordination and outreach: basic planning, promotion, event duties, and post‑event follow‑up.
  • Time management and professionalism: managing work around classes, meeting deadlines, and practicing workplace etiquette.
PREDICTED OUTCOME:
  • Increased confidence in navigating personal career planning, including stronger resume, LinkedIn, and job search skills.
  • Documented work experience in student services, higher education, or customer service that is directly transferable to future roles.
  • Expanded campus and employer network, plus familiarity with workforce trends and local job opportunities. Increased confidence in networking.

STUDENT EMPLOYMENT GUIDELINES:
  • Students must be enrolled in a minimum of six (6) credits for fall or spring semester to qualify for student employment.
  • Students may not work beyond 19 hours per week during semester.
  • Student workers shall be actively engaged; no use of cell phones (except in case of emergency) or social media.
  • Student workers shall demonstrate a commitment to the job with adherence to work schedule, effective communication/interpersonal skills, and quality customer service skills to be a representative of FVCC.
