Job summary

YMCA of Greater San Francisco seeks a Student Behavior Support Specialist for the Tenderloin Community School YMCA After School Program. Under the Program Site Director, you will build positive relationships with students, support emotional regulation, and help students engage in activities.

Position Summary

UnderthedirectionoftheProgramSiteDirector,theStudentBehaviorSupportSpecialist providesbehavioralandsocial-emotionalsupporttostudentsparticipatingintheTenderloin Community School YMCA After School Program. The role builds positive relationships with students, supports emotional regulation and conflict resolution, and helps students fully engage in program activities. Working in partnership with YMCA staff and school-day personnel, the Student Behavior Support Coordinator promotes a safe, inclusive, and supportive environment that encourages student success.

Job Responsibilities

StudentSupport&SocialEmotional Development

• Provideproactiveandresponsivesupporttostudentswhoneedadditionalassistance withbehavior,emotionalregulation,transitions,peerinteractions,orparticipationin program activities.
• Buildstrong,consistentrelationshipswithstudents,includingthosewhorequire ongoing behavioral or social-emotional support.
• Use restorative practices, positive behavior supports, conflict resolution, and de-escalationstrategiestohelpstudentsregulateemotionsandsuccessfullyre-engage in program activities.
• Supportstudentsbefore,during,andafterbehavioralincidents,includingfacilitating successful re-entry into program activities.
• Identifystudentstrengths,supportneeds,triggers,andeffectivesupportstrategies, and communicate relevant observations to YMCA leadership and appropriate school partners.
• Provideindividualandsmall-groupsupportusingastudent-centered,culturally responsive, and strengths-based approach.
• PartnerwiththeSiteCoordinatorandProgramLeaderstopromoteconsistent behavior support practices and positive group environments.
• Modeleffectiverelationship-building,redirection,restorativeresponses,andde-escalation strategies for program staff.
• SupportProgramLeadersduringsituationsrequiringadditionalstudentsupportwhile reinforcing staff ownership of group management and program expectations.
• Participateinprogramactivitiesandprovidedirectstudentsupervisionasneeded while maintaining the primary focus on student support.
• Communicatestudentsupportneeds,interventions,andfollow-upactionstothe Program Site Director in a timely and professional manner.

School-DayPartnership& Coordination

• Buildcollaborativerelationshipswithteachers,schooladministrators,student support staff, and other school partners.
• Workwithschool-daystafftounderstandeffectivestrategies,routines,andsupports that help students successfully transition into the afterschool program.
• Participateinstudentsupportmeetings,programmeetings,andcasediscussionsas assigned while maintaining confidentiality and professional boundaries.

Documentation,Communication&Program Quality

• Completeincidentreports,behavior-relateddocumentation,andotherrequired records accurately and within established timelines.
• Maintainrespectfulandprofessionalcommunicationwithstudents,families,YMCA staff, school staff, and community partners.
• Maintainconfidentialityandexercisesoundjudgmentwhenhandlingstudentand family information.
• Participateinrequiredtrainings,professionaldevelopment,staffmeetings,and program quality improvement activities.

Preferred Qualifications

• Experienceasaparaprofessional,instructionalaide,behavioralaide,studentsupport specialist, youth intervention specialist, or in a related youth support role.
• Experienceimplementingindividualizedbehaviorsupports,behaviorintervention plans, or similar student support strategies.
• Trainingorexperienceintrauma-informedpractices,restorativepractices,social-emotional learning, crisis prevention, conflict mediation, and/or de-escalation.
• Experienceworkinginunder-resourcedschoolsorcommunitiesandsupporting students with diverse behavioral and social-emotional support needs.
• Bachelor'sdegreeinEducation,Psychology,SocialWork,ChildDevelopment,Human Services, or a related field, or equivalent professional experience.
• BilingualskillsinSpanish,Cantonese,Mandarin,oranotherlanguagespokenwithin the school community.

Thispositionoperatesprimarilyinadynamicschoolandafterschoolenvironment,including classrooms, hallways, recreational spaces, and outdoor areas. The role requires regular movement throughout the school site and frequent interaction with students and staff.
