Job description

Student Assistant Specialist – Student Ambassador

The MA, Media Studies program is seeking a motivated and detail‑oriented Student Assistant Specialist. The role serves as the point of contact between the Program Director, Admissions staff, and prospective and admitted students. The specialist will monitor a dedicated email inbox to field questions about courses, lines of study and research, student life, etc. Questions about admission policies, procedures, and requirements should be referred to the Office of Admissions.

Responsibilities
  • Respond to emails sent to the ambassador account for the program; accounts will be checked at least every other day.
  • Meet with prospective students, either in person, by phone, or virtually, at a mutually convenient time.
  • Arrange class visits for prospective students who are interested in them.
  • Attend Open House/Information Sessions, including admitted student events, to provide information from the student’s perspective (typically once per month).
  • Attend monthly ambassador meetings with the Admissions point of contact.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Current graduate‑level student in good standing at The New School.
  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple tasks and meet deadlines.
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Prior experience in communications work.
  • Prior experience in news writing and/or digital publishing.
  • Design skills for print and digital media.
Eligibility & Enrollment
  • Must be a current graduate‑level student.
  • Must be registered for full‑time status (9 credits/3 courses) in the semester the student would like to be considered for a position.
  • Must be within the time limit for attaining the degree.
  • Must be a continuing student and have a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0.
  • Must not have more than 33% of attempted course credits as incompletes.
  • Must not be employed at The New School as administrative staff.
  • Must file new‑hire paperwork at the university if you are a first‑time student employee (if selected for a position).
  • International students must complete foreign‑national forms.
  • All selected students must be authorized to work in the United States and obtain a social security number.
  • All students must adhere to a 20‑hour‑per‑week work limit, including all on‑campus jobs.
  • Federal regulations limit international students to no more than 20 hours of employment per week.
  • All students must have a social security number before obtaining employment.
Compensation & Work Mode

Hourly rate: $20 per hour.

This position is 5 hours per week during the academic semester.

Work mode: Hybrid/Split – employees hired for this position can work remotely for the majority of tasks. Some new‑student events are in person. #LI-DNI
