Job summary

Software Placement Group, SPG is seeking an experienced Structures Superintendent to lead field operations on major heavy civil infrastructure projects in California. You will direct crews, subcontractors, and equipment to deliver safe, on-schedule outcomes, focusing on structures, concrete, earthwork and grading.

You will supervise field teams, ensure adherence to drawings and specs, and collaborate with project managers, engineers and inspectors on a daily basis.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED required or equivalent construction experience.
• 10+ years experience as a Superintendent on heavy civil projects.
• Strong knowledge of heavy civil methods, sequencing, and field operations.
• Proven experience managing structural concrete and earthwork operations.

Responsibilities

• Lead daily field construction operations for large-scale heavy civil projects.
• Manage structures, concrete placement, earthwork, grading, excavation and site development.
• Oversee self-performed crews, subcontractors, and equipment operators.

• Coordinate subcontractors and ensure work aligns with project requirements.

Location: Fresno, CA | Schedule: Full-time, field-based/on-site

Overview

A heavy civil construction firm is seeking an experienced Structures Superintendent to lead field operations on large-scale infrastructure projects, with a focus on structures, concrete, earthwork, grading, and major civil improvements. This is a field leadership role responsible for directing crews, subcontractors, and equipment to deliver complex heavy civil work safely, efficiently, and on schedule.

What you'll do

• Lead and supervise daily field construction operations for large-scale heavy civil projects


• Manage construction activities including structures, concrete placement, earthwork, grading, excavation, and site development


• Oversee self-performed work crews, subcontractors, equipment operators, and field personnel


• Plan and coordinate daily work activities to meet project milestones, schedules, and production goals


• Ensure construction is completed safely, efficiently, and in compliance with contract documents, drawings, specifications, and quality standards


• Provide field leadership for structural concrete operations, including foundations, bridge structures, retaining walls, box structures, and other concrete elements


• Coordinate mass grading, excavation, embankment, soil placement, compaction, and site preparation activities


• Review project plans, specifications, and drawings to provide technical direction and resolve field issues


• Assist project management with schedule development, work planning, site logistics, and construction sequencing


• Coordinate subcontractor activities and ensure work is performed according to project requirements


• Monitor labor productivity, equipment utilization, material usage, and overall project performance


• Provide recommendations regarding construction methods, equipment selection, sequencing, and means and methods


• Coordinate inspections, testing requirements, and quality control procedures


• Maintain daily reports, production tracking, manpower records, and field documentation


• Communicate effectively with Project Managers, owners, engineers, inspectors, and subcontractors


• Support and enforce project safety plans and promote a strong safety culture


• Perform additional responsibilities as assigned by project leadership

Required qualifications

• High school diploma/GED required; equivalent construction experience accepted


• 10+ years of experience as a Superintendent managing heavy civil construction projects


• Extensive knowledge of heavy civil construction methods, sequencing, and field operations


• Proven experience managing structural concrete and earthwork operations


• Strong understanding of grading plans, structural drawings, specifications, and construction documents


• Experience coordinating subcontractors, craft labor, and equipment operations


• Strong leadership, communication, and problem-solving skills


• Full-time, field-based role working on active heavy civil construction sites


• Requires daily interaction with crews, subcontractors, and project stakeholders


• Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions


• Must be able to walk active construction sites and inspect ongoing operations


• Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) required onsite


• Travel and extended project assignments may be required

Preferred qualifications

• Experience leading projects valued at $200M+ preferred


• Experience managing Heavy Civil Infrastructure Projects, Bridge Construction, Structural Concrete, Concrete Foundations, Retaining Walls, Elevated Structures, Grade Separations, Mass Excavation, Mass Grading, Earthwork Operations, Embankments and Soil Improvements, Underground Utilities, Highway and Transportation Projects, and Large Public Works Projects


• Knowledge of public works, DOT, municipal, and government construction requirements preferred


• Experience working with union labor and multiple trades preferred


• Experience with Procore or similar construction management software preferred


• Experience with Bluebeam preferred


• Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook) preferred


• Experience with HCSS HeavyBid or similar construction software preferred


• Experience with project scheduling and production tracking tools preferred


• OSHA Safety Certifications preferred


• First Aid / CPR Certification preferred


• Construction safety training certifications preferred
