Job summary

Smart Systems is seeking motivated Structured Cabling Technicians of all experience levels to join our growing team. You will work on commercial and industrial projects, developing your skills in low-voltage systems.

The role covers installation, termination, testing, and maintenance of copper and fiber optic cabling supporting voice, data, video, access control, and security infrastructure on diverse sites.

Qualifications

  • Entry-Level candidates: strong interest in technology, cabling, networking, or construction trades.
  • Willingness to learn and work hands-on in a team environment.
  • Ability to follow instructions and work effectively as part of a team.

Responsibilities

  • Install structured cabling systems (Cat5e, Cat6, Cat6A, fiber) and related infrastructure.
  • Terminate copper and fiber on patch panels, jacks, and equipment; perform testing.
  • Read blueprints, floor plans, and project specifications; assist planning of routes.
  • Maintain installation records, test results, and as-built documentation.
  • Ensure compliance with BICSI, NEC, and company quality standards.
  • Troubleshoot and maintain existing cabling; support moves/adds/changes.
  • Follow OSHA regulations and use PPE; uphold safety on site.

Job description

We are seeking motivated Structured Cabling Technicians of all experience levels to join our growing team. Whether you are just beginning your career in low-voltage systems or have years of industry experience, this role offers opportunities to develop and expand your skills while working on commercial and industrial projects.

The Structured Cabling Technician is responsible for the installation, termination, testing, troubleshooting, and maintenance of low-voltage copper and fiber optic cabling systems supporting voice, data, video, access control, and security infrastructure. Successful candidates will work closely with project teams to ensure quality installations that meet industry standards, project specifications, and safety requirements.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Install structured cabling systems, including Cat5e, Cat6, Cat6A, fiber optic cabling, and related infrastructure.
  • Install cable pathways including conduit, cable tray, ladder rack, J-hooks, and other support systems.
  • Pull, route, label, and dress cabling according to project specifications and industry standards.
Termination and Testing
  • Terminate copper and fiber optic cabling on patch panels, jacks, equipment, and field devices.
  • Perform certification testing and troubleshooting using industry-standard test equipment.
  • Identify and resolve cabling and connectivity issues to ensure optimal system performance.
Blueprint and Documentation Review
  • Read and interpret blueprints, floor plans, schematics, and project specifications.
  • Assist in planning cable routes and installation methods.
  • Maintain accurate installation records, test results, and as-built documentation.
Quality Control
  • Ensure all work complies with BICSI standards, NEC requirements, manufacturer specifications, and company quality standards.
  • Conduct self-inspections and participate in project quality reviews.
Maintenance and Service
  • Troubleshoot, repair, and maintain existing structured cabling systems.
  • Diagnose cable failures, connectivity issues, and infrastructure problems.
  • Support moves, adds, and changes for customer systems.
Safety and Compliance
  • Follow OSHA regulations, company safety policies, and job site requirements.
  • Utilize appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) at all times.
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work environment.
  • Work effectively with project managers, supervisors, lead technicians, engineers, and fellow technicians.
  • Communicate project progress, challenges, and solutions in a professional manner.
  • Contribute to a positive team environment focused on quality workmanship and customer satisfaction.
Qualifications
Entry-Level Candidates
  • Strong interest in technology, cabling, networking, or construction trades.
  • Willingness to learn and work in a hands-on environment.
  • Ability to follow instructions and work effectively as part of a team.
Experienced Candidates
  • 2+ years of experience in structured cabling, low-voltage systems, telecommunications, or related fields preferred.
  • Experience with copper and fiber optic installation, termination, and testing.
  • Ability to read blueprints and understand project specifications.
Preferred Certifications
  • BICSI Installer or Technician Certification
  • OSHA 10 or OSHA 30 Certification
Additional Requirements
  • Reliable transportation to and from job sites.
  • Ability to pass a background check and pre-employment drug screening.
  • Valid driver's license preferred.
Skills and Abilities
  • Understanding of structured cabling systems and network infrastructure.
  • Ability to safely operate hand tools and power tools.
  • Strong attention to detail and organizational skills.
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills.

Physical Requirements
  • Ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds regularly.
  • Ability to stand, walk, kneel, crouch, crawl, and climb ladders for extended periods.
  • Comfortable working at heights, in confined spaces, and in various indoor and outdoor environments.
  • Ability to use both hands for cable pulling, termination, and equipment installation.
  • Job sites vary from commercial office spaces to construction environments that may or may not be climate controlled.
