Job summary

General Dynamics NASSCO in Norfolk, Virginia is seeking 5 Structural Welders (Journeyman levels 1–4) for the day shift, 6 am to 2:45 pm with a 45 minute lunch. The roles require welding with SMAW, GMAW and FCAW and the ability to access Navy installations using DBIDS/NAVSEA badges.

Candidates must have a High School Diploma or GED plus 2 years of related shipbuilding or ship repair experience, read weld gauges, and work with HY-80/HY-100 materials.

Qualifications

• High School Diploma or GED plus 2 years related ship building/repair experience.
• Proficient in SMAW, GMAW and FCAW welding processes.
• Knowledge of HY-80 and HY-100 base metals and weld symbols.
• Able to read weld gauges and use hand tools.
• Capable of using oxy-acetylene torch and basic welding setup.
• Must be able to obtain Navy DBIDS/NAVSEA badges.

Responsibilities

• Weld using SMAW, GMAW and FCAW processes on various metals.
• Read weld gauges and verify weld quality to NDT standards.
• Set up, rig and operate welding tools and equipment.
• Work under supervision with adherence to 5S guidelines.

We are looking for 5 Structural Welders J1- J4 for the day shift 6 am - 2:45pm with a 45 minute lunch.

Must be able to access all Navy installations and other shipyards by obtaining DBIDS and NAVSEA badges.

GUIDELINES FOR STRUCTURE WELDER

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND PURPOSE (Job Description) The Structural Welder should be able to weld using SMAW, GMAW and FCAW welding process.

POSITION DEMANDS (Education/Training) High School Diploma/GED plus 2 years directly related ship building/ship repair experience.

JOURNEYPERSON 4 (Welder) Should have knowledge of welding on different types of base metals (HY-80 & HY-100). Know the different wire and gas combinations. Should be proficient in using SMAW, GMAW and FCAW welding process. Quality of weld should be acceptable for N.D.T. should be able to weld steel, aluminum, copper nickel, stainless steel. Should be able to read weld gauges. Should be able to use hand tools. Some guidance from supervision will be needed. Must know standard item 1689 and the guide lines of 5 S.

JOURNEYPERSON 3 (Welder) Should be able to weld using SMAW, GMAW and FCAW welding process. Quality of weld should be acceptable for N.D.T. Should be able to weld some pipe using SMAW process. Should be able to weld Steel, aluminum, copper nickel, stainless steel. Should be able to hook up oxygen and acetylene torch and read weld gauges. Should be able to use hand tools with little supervision. Must know standard item 1689 and the guide lines of 5 S.

JOURNEYPERSON 2 (Welder) Should be able to weld using SMAW, GMAW and FCAW welding process. Be able to hook up oxygen acetylene torch. Should be able to read weld gauges and able to use hand tools with supervision. Must know standard item 1689 and the guide lines of 5 S.

JOURNEYPERSON 1 (Welder) Should be able to weld using SMAW, GMAW and FCAW welding process. Be able to hook up oxygen acetylene torch. Should be able to read weld gauges and able to use hand tools with close supervision. Should have knowledge of weld symbols. Must know standard item 1689 and the guide lines of 5 S.
