Job summary

Gulf Island is seeking a Structural Welder to assemble and weld structural frames (I-beams, angle iron) in our Houston fabrication/shop environment. The role involves reading weld symbols, tack welding in all positions, and using multiple processes (GMAW, FACW, SMAW).

Qualified candidates have 2+ years in structural welding, can pass a 3G test on 1/2” carbon steel, and must pass drug and background checks. High school diploma or equivalent preferred.

Qualifications

• 2+ years experience in structural welding within a fabrication environment.
• Ability to pass a 3G weld test on 1/2” carbon steel plate.
• Must pass pre-employment drug screen.

Responsibilities

• Assemble and weld structural framework using angle iron, I-beams and other steel components.
• Read weld symbols on shop drawings and apply information accordingly.
• Tack weld in all positions using multiple welding processes.
• Operate grinding equipment and basic cutting tools.
• Perform crane operation and material handling.
• Maintain clean, safe work area and follow safety procedures.
• Identify hazards and implement corrective actions.
• Produce finished welds that meet codes and customer expectations.

Description

Main Purpose:

The Structural Welder assembles and welds structural framework, components and materials such as angle iron, I-beams and other steel components within our Englobal Fabrication and Instrumentation and Electrical (I&E) Integration Shop.

Essential Functions:

• Usevarious processes including GMAW (Mig), FACW (Flux Core) and / or SMAW (Stick)
• Maintain a positive work atmosphere by functioning and communicating in an effective manner with customers, coworkers, clients and supervisors
• Perform daily cleaning and maintenance of area
• Work in a safe and conscientious manner
• Perform other job-related duties as assigned by supervisor including but not limited to, cleaning, trash/ scrap removal and other production related jobs
• Assist in yearly audited inventory process
• Perform basic crane operation
• Operate various pieces of grinding equipment for extended periods
• Operate cutting and heating torches and perform accurate simple heat corrections
• Check camber and sweep tolerances of girders and beams with minimal assistance and be able to effectively make necessary corrections per pertinent codes and specifications
• Tack weld in all positions using multiple welding processes
• Grind parts, torque bolts and operate mechanical and manual cutting equipment
• Produce a finished product that meets recognized standards, codes and customer expectations by maintaining quality procedures and practices
• Identify potential hazards and make necessary corrections
• Read and interpret weld symbols on shop drawings and prints and apply information accordingly
• Perform other duties assigned by supervisor

Requirements

Physical Requirements:

• Standing, sitting, walking, stooping, kneeling, climbing, feeling, talking, hearing and seeing
• Turning, twisting, bending and balancing
• Pushing, pulling and reaching
• Must be able to lift and / or move up to 25 pounds and occasionally 50-75 pounds

Job Requirements:

• 2+ years experience in structural welding within a fabrication environment
• Must be able to pass a structural welder test (3G on 1/2” carbon steel plate)
• Must be able to pass pre-employment drug screen
• Must be able to pass a background check

Desirable Experience, Education and Training:

• High School Diploma or equivalent preferred

Tools, Equipment and Technology:

• Structural welding tools, structural welding tools, Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) etc.

Environmental Conditions:

80 to 90% of the work activities are performed indoors within our Englobal Fabrication and I&E Integration Shop. Individuals will be required to work in changes of temperature, hot, cold, humid, wet and dry conditions, dust, mud etc.
