Job summary

Missouri Department of Transportation in Jefferson City, MO, seeks a Structural Technician to prepare detailed construction plans for highway bridges and related structures. Work is performed under moderate supervision in a CAREER-LADDER role offering advancement without competitive interviews.

You will develop plans, compute material quantities, review shop drawings, draft CAD materials, and assist designers with layouts for bridges and walls.

Qualifications

• Associate’s degree or equivalent experience in civil engineering technology/drafting.
• Four years of experience in technical positions.

Responsibilities

• Develops detailed construction plans for highway structures and computes material quantities and reinforcing bar lists.
• Reviews and approves shop drawings, performs calculations to ensure conformance to contract documents, and documents issues and changes.
• Details plan view, elevation view and cross section of bridge elements from designer outlines.
• Prepares or revises manuals using Computer Aided Drafting (CAD).
• Develops preliminary layouts from designers' calculations for bridges and retaining walls.

This position may be filled at one of the three levels based on knowledge, skills, and abilities. The entry salary is posted above, with the intermediate starting salary of $44,729.52 and a senior starting salary of $48,621.60.

What you’ll do:

• Develops detailed construction plans for any type of highway structure, computes quantities of construction materials required for structures and computes reinforcing bar lists.
• Reviews and approves detailed shop drawings and performs calculations to ensure conformance to contract documents; helps to solve any materials or fabrication problems and documents any problems and changes.
• Details and dimensions plan view, elevation view and cross section of any bridge element using outline sketches provided by the designer.
• Prepares or revises written and graphic material for inclusion in division manuals utilizing computer aided drafting.
• Develops preliminary layout and details from designers' calculations for bridges and retaining walls.

All you need for success:

Minimum Qualifications

• Associate’s Degree in Civil Engineering Technology, Drafting, or related field. OR
• Four years of experience in technical positions

Special Working Conditions:

• A postsecondary degree is the best measure to ensure candidates possess required knowledge in computer aided drafting; trigonometry, geometry, and physics; statics and strength of materials; surveying concepts; material quantity calculations, takeoffs, and unit pricing; and dimensioning concepts.
