Job summary

MoDOT in Jefferson City, MO is seeking an engineering intern (structural designer) to prepare design computations, drawings, and sketches for transportation structures such as routine bridges, retaining walls, and box culverts. Work is performed under moderate supervision.

You will use engineering software and spreadsheets to develop bridge design aids, review LRFD code articles against policy, and assist with bridge load-rating, data collection, and inspections as needed.

Qualifications

• Must be enrolled full-time in ABET-accredited engineering program.
• Overall GPA of 2.0 or higher (4.0 scale).
• Must have completed at least 30 credit hours.
• Must be able to work no more than 1,039 hours per year.

Responsibilities

• Use engineering software and spreadsheets to develop bridge design aids.
• Develop spreadsheets for limited scope design tasks.
• Review LRFD code articles and compare with policy guidance.
• Review history files for data collection and input National Bridge Inventory data.
• Assist Bridge Management with load-rating and bridge inspections (if desired).
• Performs other responsibilities as required or assigned.

This position will be filled at a salary no higher than the posted maximum salary.

Job Location: Central Office, 105 West Capitol Avenue, Jefferson City, MO

• Six positions will be filled.

What You’ll Do

• Uses engineering software, spreadsheets, or performs design computations to develop bridge design aids.
• Develops spreadsheets for limited scope design tasks.
• Reviews American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO) Load Resistance Factor Design (LRFD) code articles and compares with engineering policy guidance.
• Reviews history files for data collection.
• Assists the Bridge Management section with bridge load-rating, collecting, and inputting National Bridge Inventory data, working on special rating projects, and helping with bridge inspections (if desired).
• Performs other responsibilities as required or assigned.

• Must be currently enrolled in a relevant bachelor's or post-bachelor's degree program full-time (12+ credit hours); for engineering candidates, program must be ABET-accredited Must possess, and maintain, an overall GPA of 2.0 or higher out of 4.0.
• Must have completed at least 30 credit hours. High school or other postsecondary program credits must be shown to be accepted by the current program through a degree transcript to apply.

Special Working Conditions And Job Characteristics

• This is a wage, non-benefits eligible position, working no more than 1,039 hours per year.
• The typical working hours are Monday through Friday from 7:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.
