Job summary

Rolls-Royce is hiring a Structural Systems Design Engineer in Indianapolis, IN. This full-time, hybrid role focuses on robust mechanical design, analysis and experimentation to support the Design function within the Mechanical Integrity Engineering team.

You will apply Design for Process Excellence principles, develop numerical models, and provide expert guidance across disciplines. The position requires a engineering degree and US citizenship, with relocation available.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering with 1+ years of experience, OR Master’s degree in Engineering, OR JD/PhD.
  • US Citizenship is required to be considered for this opportunity.
  • Strong technical knowledge in mechanical design methodologies and cross-discipline concepts.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct Aeros/Thermal, Acoustic and Structure Mechanical Design and Analysis, including model development and boundary conditions.
  • Conduct Aeros/Thermal, Acoustic and Structure Mechanical experiments with test rigs and engines.
  • Provide advisory services within the engineering discipline and mentor peers.
  • Deliver defined technical packages against milestones, cost, time, and quality requirements.
  • Promote continuous improvement tools, processes and methods within the team.

Job Title: Structural Systems Design Engineer

Working Pattern: Full time

The Structural Systems Design Engineer is part of the Mechanical Integrity Engineering team who supports the Design function by undertaking analysis of the proposed designs to ensure that they are robust and that they meet requirements. The Structural Systems Design Engineer also makes recommendations to optimize the design and apply Robust Engineering (Design for Process Excellence) principles.

What you will be doing
  • Conduct Aeros/Thermal, Acoustic and Structure Mechanical Design and Analysis, including selection and generation, involvement in further development of numerical models, use of nominal calculation methods, development of interdisciplinary agreed boundary conditions, implementation into own models and other disciplines, plausibility check of boundary conditions, execution and analysis of numerical model calculations, understanding calculations, and deriving suggestions for improvements.
  • Conduct Aeros/Thermal, Acoustic and Structure Mechanical experiments, including preparation of experiment specifications for tests on test rigs and engines, supervision and support of experiments, plausibility check of results, analysis and interpretation of test results, and comparison with analytical and/or empirical models.
  • Resolve problems through evaluative judgments, analyzing factual information from multiple sources, interpreting results, and identifying effective solutions using technical knowledge, expertise and engineering judgment.
  • Be responsible for defined technical packages/investigations of work, providing delivery against program milestones within agreed cost, timescale and quality requirements.
  • Act as a point of contact within a given engineering discipline and share subject matter knowledge across the function, including providing advisory services to designated customers, influencing their peer group, representing senior departmental staff and acting as advisor/coach on matters of technical authority.
  • Understand company business and function objectives, ensuring that work supports these objectives, and always act in accordance with company values and professional engineering standards.
  • Promote, encourage and support identification and implementation of continuous improvement tools, processes and methods within and outside the immediate sphere, prompting action across the wider team.

Basic Requirements
  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering with 1+ years of experience, OR
  • Master’s degree in Engineering, OR
  • JD/PhD
  • In order to be considered for this opportunity, you must be a US Citizen
Preferred Requirements
  • Strong technical knowledge in mechanical design methodologies and understanding cross-discipline engineering concepts including but not limited to manufacturing engineering, aerodynamics, thermodynamics, thermal and mechanical analysis, cost engineering and product definition.
  • Nuclear Specific – Must exhibit strong technical knowledge in mechanical design methodologies and understand and ability to integrate cross discipline engineering concepts including but not limited to manufacturing engineering, hydrodynamics, thermodynamics, stress analysis both static and dynamic, fracture and fatigue assessment, cost engineering, installation & commissioning. Undertake a wide range of roles including project and change management, conceptual design, final design verification, support and approval of the final product definition, support manufacturing and integration activities.
  • Ability to apply logical, analytical and innovative thinking on a range of technical problems and make balanced decisions across technical and business parameters – Knowledge and experience of product integrity / liability and certification frameworks.
  • Good communication and presentation skills at all levels of the organization.
