Job summary

Rolls-Royce seeks an entry level Component Design Engineer in Indianapolis, hybrid work pattern with three days onsite. You will design, analyze, test, and document mechanical components within flagship defense programs, ensuring alignment with project requirements from concept to demonstration testing.

Responsibilities include translating system requirements to component hardware, developing interfaces, BOMs, and contributing to drawings or MB/Definition for production. Relocation is available.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical or Aerospace Engineering.
  • U.S. citizenship with the ability to obtain/maintain a security clearance.

  • Lead design and analysis activities for mechanical systems hardware from requirements to completion.
  • Cascade system requirements to sub-system and component hardware requirements.
  • Provide hardware concepts and perform trade studies for optimized hardware.
  • Create interfaces with other component engineers and document them.
  • Develop BOM and integrate with project product structure and configuration.
  • Support engineering drawings or model-based definitions for procurement.
  • Define limits for engine and rig testing and assess test results.
  • Develop technical presentations and reports delivering solutions.

Job Title: Component Design Engineer

Working Pattern: Full time

Working location: Indianapolis, IN/Hybrid (3 days week onsite avg.)

We have a great opportunity for an entry level Component Design Engineer to join our growing team. This is an exciting opportunity to work on flagship Rolls‑Royce programs and play an important role in addressing some of the most complex and interesting technological challenges in Defense. The Component Design Engineer will work primarily with the components within the major subsystems to design, produce, and test components and mechanical systems. In this role, the candidate ensures the component definition meets project requirements from concept through to demonstration test.

What you will be doing
  • Lead design and analysis activities for mechanical systems hardware, from requirements capture through program completion.
  • Understand and cascade system requirements into sub‑system and component hardware requirements and issue requirement documents.
  • Provide hardware design concepts and perform trade studies to optimise hardware including basic CADD modelling and structural analysis.
  • Create and document functional and physical interfaces with other component engineers.
  • Develop hardware bill of material and collaborate across teams to integrate with the project‑level product structure and configuration.
  • Support creation of engineering drawings and/or model‑based definition for project/manufacturing to procure conforming hardware.
  • Provide limits for engine and rig testing and supporting testing including assessment of test results and tested hardware.
  • Develop technical presentations and technical reports in the delivery of solutions.

Basic Requirements:
  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical or Aerospace Engineering
  • To be considered for this role, you must be a U.S. citizen with the ability to obtain and maintain a high‑level security clearance.
Preferred Requirements:
  • 3.0 GPA or higher
  • Familiarity using computer aided design tools such as NX
  • Basic knowledge of Geometric Dimensions and Tolerances (GD&T), and the creation of limit stacks.
  • Familiarity with generic design processes and design methods
  • Some experience using finite element analysis tools (such as ANSYS Classic or Workbench)
  • Programming skills such as Visual Basic, MATLAB, Python, PERL, C++
  • Understanding of engine assembly and testing
  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills
  • Ability to work on complex projects, prioritise tasks and react quickly to changing requirements
