Job summary

Interwest Consulting Group in California seeks an experienced Structural Plans Examiner to join our municipal engineering team. You will review plans for compliance with CA codes, coordinate with Building, Planning, and public works staff, and help ensure timely project approvals.

This role suits self-motivated professionals who value accuracy and collaborative problem solving. Qualified candidates will have a Structural or Civil PE license, 3–5 years of plan review experience, and proficiency

Qualifications

  • Licensed PE in structural/civil engineering.
  • CASp certification preferred.
  • 3–5 years of structural design and plan review experience.

Responsibilities

  • Review plans and specs for CA/state/federal compliance and communicate deficiencies.
  • Review building permits per Building Division regulations.
  • Assist inspectors with code issues and respond to plan review questions.
  • Cultivate positive relationships with clients and stakeholders to gain cooperation.

RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Reviews plans and specifications for projects to ensure compliance with city, State of CA, and federal laws and regulations. Provide timely oral and/or written communication detailing design and/or construction deficiencies in plans and specifications.
  • Review building permits with regards to regulations set by the Building Divisions
  • Assist inspectors with difficult or unusual code compliance issues and answer questions from inspectors about plan review comments.
  • Cultivate, foster, and maintain positive working relationships with internal and external customers such as directors, managers, supervisors, employees, and other stakeholders to gain their cooperation and support on assigned projects/assignments.
KNOWLEDGE & SKILLS:
  • Experience with CA Codes specific to Structural design
  • Experience/knowledge of wood, concrete, steel and masonry buildings/structures, including CBC, CRC, ASCE7, NDS, AISC, ACI318, ACI530 and AISI standards.
  • Experience/knowledge of wood, steel and concrete lateral load resisting systems (SMF, OMF, BRBF, SCBF, wood and concrete shear walls, etc.)
  • Experience/knowledge of structural design software (i.e. ENERCALC, ETABS, SAP, RISA, ADAPT, HILTI Profis, Simpson Anchor design, etc.)
  • Extensive knowledge of local building codes and current construction procedures/technology
  • Interpretation of codes in the field and ability to provide code compliant solutions
  • Must possess the ability to positively interact with the other staff members, the general public, contractors, governmental entities, and other clientele
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills are vital
  • Good time management, organization, and attention to detail
  • Demonstrated ability to exercise initiative and a considerable amount of independent judgment
  • Ability to produce quality plan reviews on time and within budget
EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE:
  • Structural or Civil Professional Engineer required
  • CASp certification preferred
  • ICC Residential Plan Review CertificationsPreferred
  • Valid driver’s license with good driving record
  • 3-5 years' experience in structural design and structural plan review.
