Job summary

Colliers Engineering & Design is seeking a highly motivated intern for Summer 2027 in our Lansing, MI office to support Buildings/Structural Engineering. The role involves learning internal systems for structural calculations, drawings, and construction administration, and performing calculations using several design programs under PM guidance.

Qualifications

• Pursuing a bachelor’s or master’s degree in civil engineering, structural engineering, or a related field.
• Current Junior, Senior, or Graduate student preferred.
• Experience with Revit preferred.
• Experience with structural design software such as RISA, RAM, TEKLA, TEDDS, SAFE, PROFIS, etc. preferred.
• Completion of structural analysis coursework required.
• Completion of coursework regarding steel, concrete, masonry, and wood design principles preferred.
• Prior internship experience a plus.
• A willingness to learn and adapt to new software and client needs.
• Strong Microsoft Office skills.
• Able to work independently and also collaboratively on a team.
• Strong communication skills.
• Ability to read, write and understand English for purposes of comprehending written job-related communications and verbal instructions and interactions.

Responsibilities

• Become knowledgeable with internal systems for structural calculations, structural drawings and construction administration.
• Perform routine structural calculations assigned by Project Manager by hand and with the assistance of design programs and internal spreadsheets to develop familiarity with material codes.
• Become familiar with design codes and methodologies for various materials.
• Hand sketch redlines on structural drawings for drafting technicians.
• Open and manipulate architectural drawings to verify the work of drafting technicians and investigate coordination issues.
• Prepare calculation and drawing packages for review by Project Managers or Project Engineers.
• Review material submittals and shop drawings for conformance with structural drawings.
• Assist with inspections, field investigations & surveys.
• Edit and compile relevant specification sections addressing structural items.
