Cleveland-Cliffs has an immediate opening for a Structural Engineer at our Northshore Mining Company facility in Silver Bay, MN. The role focuses on developing and implementing site-wide structural steel management plans, including assessments, prioritization, and management strategies.

Responsibilities include managing projects from concept through installation, coordinating with contractors, and conducting cost projections while maintaining safety standards.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering with Structural emphasis preferred.
  • Professional Engineer license in Minnesota or ability to obtain.
  • Experience in project management and cost budgeting.
  • Experience with design calculations, material specs, and drawings.

  • Coordinate internal teams and external contractors to meet specifications and safety standards.
  • Provide structural assessments and cost projections to management.
  • Develop and maintain rolling 5-year capital and maintenance plan.

  • Ensure proper documentation of contracts and work scopes.

Job description

Location: Silver Bay, MN Cleveland-Cliffs has an immediate opening for a Structural Engineer at our Northshore Mining Company facility. This position will be located between the Minnesota Mine Sites. The primary responsibility of this position will be to develop and implement site wide structural steel management plans to include assessments, prioritization, and management plans.

Summary of Responsibilities
  • Manage structural engineering projects from concept, design, calculations, material specifications, drawings, cost estimates, contractor management, to installation
  • Ensure contract work is documented properly with specifications and work scopes, coordinate within operational needs and completed safely
  • Direct and coordinate work performed by engineering consultants and contractors
  • Direct and coordinate work performed by operating employees as required for new equipment installation or testing to ensure conformity to engineering design and specifications
  • Provide structural assessments to management, engineers, and mechanical crafts people on as needed basis
  • Conduct studies and prepare reports on project cost projections and potential cost-saving projects
  • Evaluate structures and provide recommendations regarding condition and risk mitigation
  • Develop and maintain a rolling five-year capital and maintenance plan for the facility
  • Promote and support a strong safety culture while ensuring all engineering activities comply with applicable safety standards and regulations
  • Produce design and fabrication drawings using AutoCAD or Solidworks
  • Other duties as assigned
Minimum Requirements
  • Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering; Structural Engineering emphasis preferred.
  • Mechanical Engineering degree considered with demonstrated experience.
  • Ability to obtain a Professional Engineering (PE) license in Minnesota.
  • Previous knowledge of project management and creation of work scopes.
  • Previous project engineering experience.
  • Experience with cost analysis and budgeting.
  • Ability to plan and coordinate multiple work tasks with a variety of employees, departments and outside contractors. Able to set goals and develop strategies and schedules to accomplish goals.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and the ability to motivate, empower, and delegate. Willing to promote team concepts and enforce company policies fairly and consistently.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills and be able to interact with and communicate with all levels of the organization.
  • Able to think logically using factual data and structure ideas to influence others; make sound, timely decisions under conditions of uncertainty and risk.
  • Able to multi-task and work well under demanding conditions.
  • Possess strong computer skills; Microsoft Office experience, Access experience, and AutoCAD/Solidworks experience; preference for individuals with computerized maintenance management system experience.
  • Capable of working effectively and safely using a participative management style in a team environment.
Preferred Requirements
  • 2+ years of experience in mining or heavy industry.
  • Project management experience.
  • Structural inspections.
  • Structural steel and reinforced concrete design experience.
  • Familiarity with AISC, ACI, and ASCE design standards.
  • Structural analysis software.
  • Professional Engineering (PE) license in the state of Minnesota.

The salary range for this role is $80,000 - $105,000. An employee’s pay within the salary range will be based on numerous factors including, but not limited to, relevant education, qualifications, experience, skills, geographic location and business or organizational needs.
