Job summary

Colliers Engineering & Design is seeking a Structural Engineer in Training in Austin, TX or Cypress, TX to join our Structural Engineering team. The role involves calculations, modeling, redlining, and detailing, with oversight from Project Managers or Engineers and collaboration with the design architect as needed.

Responsibilities include gravity and lateral design tasks, code familiarization (IBC, ASCE7, AISC360, ACI, NDS), document preparation, and field support.

Qualifications

  • 2+ years of professional building structural engineering experience.
  • E.I.T. required.
  • Proficiency with structural design software (RISA, RAM, TEKLA, TEDDS, SAFE, PROFIS).
  • Ability to read, write and understand English for job communications.

Responsibilities

  • Perform routine structural calculations by hand and with design programs to develop familiarity with materials and internal resources.
  • Prepare calculation and drawing packages for review by engineers.
  • Review submittals and shop drawings for conformance with structural drawings.
  • Assist with inspections, field investigations and surveys.
  • Coordinate with project team to resolve design issues and respond to RFIs.

Overview

Colliers Engineering & Design is currently seeking a Structural Engineer in Training to join our Structural Engineering team in our Austin, TX or Cypress, TX office.

From industrial design to multifamily, Colliers Engineering & Design engineers will ensure your project meets today’s safety standards as well as your functional requirements. Our structural engineers are able to design the structural systems for buildings, foundations, and earth retention for all types of new construction, additions, adaptive reuse, and renovations. Our engineers have the knowledge and experience to design projects utilizing steel framing, conventional and pt concrete, mass timber, wood framing, light gauge, and masonry.

Engineers In Training can be responsible for: Calculations, Modeling, Redlining, Detailing, Back checking, Specifications, RFIs, and OOCs. Throughout all steps of the project the Engineer in Training will consult with an assigned Project Manager or Project Engineer. An Engineer in Training may interact with the design architect to resolve design issues, coordinate drawings, and perform CA duties. Engineers In Training will receive tasks from Project Managers. Depending on resource allocation and project complexity task may be one portion of a project such as gravity design or may be broader such as CD’s and CA.

By developing strong connections with our clients, Colliers Engineering & Design engineers ensure our designs meet project goals. Our projects include new buildings, renovations and re-purposing.

Streamlined coordination with other in-house services will facilitate an efficient approach and complete engineering package that spans all phases of structural design and construction. This includes feasibility studies, scope and condition assessment, code compliance review, static/dynamic load analyses, drawing preparation, bidding services, and construction administration.

Responsibilities
  • Become knowledgeable with internal systems for structural calculations, structural drawings and construction administration.
  • Perform routine structural calculations assigned by Project Manager by hand and with the assistance of design programs and internal spreadsheets to develop personal familiarity with material codes (concrete, steel, wood, masonry, light gauge) and internal resources. Calculations to be reviewed with significant input from Project Manager. Calculations include:
    • Gravity design of beams, columns, studs, etc including connection design.
    • Lateral design of shear walls, steel braces and LG X-Braces.
    • Uplift design.
    • Foundation design.
  • Become familiar with design codes and methodologies for various materials including:
    • Wood and Light Gauge.
    • Steel.
    • Concrete and CMU.
  • Hand sketch redlines on structural drawings for drafting technicians.
  • Review structural drawings for compliance with redlines, architecture and internal standards.
  • Open and manipulate architectural drawings to verify the work of drafting technicians and investigate coordination issues.
  • Prepare calculation and drawing packages for review by Project Managers or Project Engineers.
  • Review material submittals and shop drawings for conformance with structural drawings.
  • Assist with inspections, field investigations & surveys.
  • Edit and compile relevant specification sections addressing structural items. Coordinate with Architect on sections and format.
  • Respond to Requests For Information (RFIs) and provide solutions to field issues with input from Project Engineer or Project Manager. Responses from Engineer in Training to be reviewed by Project Manager.
Qualifications
  • 2+ years of professional building structural engineering experience required.
  • E.I.T. required.
  • Possess an intermediate to advanced understanding of structural design software such RISA, RAM, TEKLA, TEDDS, SAFE, PROFIS, etc. with a willingness to learn and adapt to new software.
  • A willingness to learn and adapt to new software and client needs.
  • Understanding of steel, concrete, masonry, and wood design principles.
  • Light gauge experience is preferred.
  • Knowledge of current building and material design codes and standards such as IBC, ASCE7, AISC360, ACI318, ACI 530 or NDS.
  • Strong Microsoft Office skills.
  • Able to work independently and also collaboratively on a team.
  • Strong communication skills.
  • Ability to read, write and understand English for purposes of comprehending written job-related communications and verbal instructions and interactions.
