Job summary

Northrop Grumman Space Sector seeks a Structural Engineer – Level 4 for a role in Promontory, UT. You will assess fracture integrity of rocket propulsion parts, oversee testing, and craft analyses and reports for internal and external stakeholders.

The position requires a STEM degree with substantial experience, strong communication and project management skills, and eligibility to obtain a U.S. DoD Secret clearance. Schedule is 9/80 with every other Friday off.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in STEM with 8+ years of experience, or Master’s with 6+ years, or PhD with 4+ years.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a U.S. Government DoD Secret security clearance.
  • Familiarity with design and modeling software (NX).
  • Strong communication, planning, project management and presentation skills.
  • Knowledge of fracture/crack growth codes and structural analysis software.

Responsibilities

  • Assess the structural/fracture integrity of rocket propulsion systems using closed form methods and finite element techniques.
  • Plan and oversee fracture characterization testing of materials used in rocket design.
  • Convert test data into input properties and material capabilities for analyses.
  • Prepare reports documenting fracture assessments and results.
  • Prepare and present summaries of fracture assessment results for review boards and customers.
  • Develop disposition for discrepant hardware and anomalies.
  • Collaborate with design, quality, safety, thermal, materials, and operations teams to support rocket motor requirements.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Position Overview

Northrop Grumman’s Space Sector invites you to bring your pioneering spirit to our collaborative teams. As a Structural Engineer – Level 4 located in Promontory, UT, you’ll be a linchpin in missions of paramount importance, defining the art of the possible from day one.

Relocation assistance may be available. Clearance required: None. Travel: Yes, 10% of the time.

This position will work a 9/80 schedule, with every other Friday off.

Job Responsibilities
  • Assess the structural/fracture integrity of rocket propulsion systems and related components using traditional closed form methods as well as finite element techniques.
  • Plan and oversee fracture characterization testing of various materials used in the design of rockets.
  • Reduce fracture characterization test data into analysis input properties and material capability properties.
  • Prepare reports and memos documenting fracture assessment activities and results.
  • Prepare and make presentations summarizing fracture assessment results for internal review boards and external customers.
  • Perform assessment and develop disposition of discrepant hardware and hardware anomalies.
  • Interact with design and development teams (design, quality, safety, thermal, materials, operations) to support innovative and creative design solutions that meet rocket motor requirements (technical, cost, schedule).
  • Other duties as assigned.
Basic Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree (STEM) with 8 years of professional experience – or – Master’s degree (STEM) with 6 years of professional experience – or – PhD with 4 years of professional experience.
  • Must have the ability to obtain and maintain a U.S. Government DoD Secret security clearance.
  • Familiarity of design and modeling software (NX).
  • Strong and demonstrated communication, planning, project management and presentation skills.
  • Strong knowledge of fracture/crack growth codes, and associated structural analysis software and their application.
Preferred Qualifications
  • MS or PhD Degree in Mechanical, Aerospace, or Civil Engineering with emphasis in fracture mechanics and analysis, and solid mechanics or finite element theory.
  • History of journal or conference publication.
  • Research/coursework in composite structures.

Salary Range: $122,800.00 - $184,200.00 (general guideline; subject to factors such as scope, responsibilities, experience, education, skills, and market conditions). Depending on the position, employees may be eligible for overtime, shift differential, discretionary bonus, and for Vice President or Director positions, Long Term Incentives are possible.
