Job summary

Thomas Young Group, a leading forensic engineering firm in Washington, DC, seeks an experienced structural engineer to join its team. The role involves field assessments, failure analysis, and preparing reports for clients, contractors, and code officials.

Candidates should have a PE license in MD/DC/VA/WV/PA, an ABET-accredited Civil or Architectural Engineering degree, at least five years of experience, and strong knowledge of ICC, ASCE, AISC, ACI, and NDS. Travel may be required.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering or Architectural Engineering from an ABET-accredited program.
• Licensed Professional Engineer (PE) in MD, DC, VA, WV, and PA (or ability to obtain additional state licensure).
• Minimum of 5 years of experience in structural engineering with a strong understanding of structural behavior.
• Proficiency in national building and construction codes (ICC, ASCE, AISC, ACI, NDS).
• Field experience in assessing structural damage and failures.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills.
• Experience providing litigation support, including expert testimony, is a plus.

Responsibilities

• Conduct field assessments to document structural conditions and damage from natural (wind, water, fire, seismic activity, etc.) and human-induced factors
• Analyze structural failures, identify causes, and recommend repair solutions
• Review design drawings and project documentation for forensic investigations
• Prepare detailed technical reports and liaise with clients, contractors, and code officials
• Manage multiple projects simultaneously, ensuring timely and budget-conscious execution
• Travel occasionally on short notice to support investigations
