Job summary

SME Steel is seeking a Design Engineer to join our Erection Engineering team. The role focuses on temporary stability design for steel erection plans, analyzing loading conditions and developing sequencing to ensure safe installation of complex steel structures.

You will perform structural analysis using SAP2000, RISA, RAM, and produce REVIT models and drawings. Collaboration with Project Management and field teams is essential for successful project execution.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering required; Master’s degree preferred.
• EIT certification minimum; PE preferred.
• Min. 2 years of experience in structural design/analysis, preferably in structural steel.
• Proficiency with structural analysis software (SAP2000, RISA, RAM).
• REVIT modeling and drawing production experience preferred.

SME Steel is seeking a talented Design Engineer to join our Erection Engineering team. This role is pivotal in performing temporary stability design for steel erection plans, analyzing temporary and staged loading conditions, and developing sequencing and erection strategies to ensure the safe and efficient installation of complex steel structures.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Must be able to perform each essential duty daily.

• Conduct structural analysis for temporary and staged loading conditions, including temporary stability design for SME steel erection plans.
• Develop erection planning, sequencing, and strategies to support safe and efficient installation.
• Support crane planning, rigging, and other pre-construction planning.
• Collaborate closely with internal teams at SME (such as Project Management, Field, Pre-Construction) and external clients (including General Contractors and Structural Engineers of Record).
• Identify and resolve constructability issues to facilitate smooth project execution.
• Support the successful erection and integration of final structural systems.
• Utilize structural analysis software (e.g., SAP2000, RISA, RAM) for design and analysis tasks.
• Produce REVIT models and drawings as needed to aid in project documentation and communication.
• Maintain clear and effective communication across all disciplines to ensure project alignment and success.

QUALIFICATIONS

• Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering required; Master’s degree preferred.
• EIT certification minimum; PE preferred.
• Min. 2 years of experience in relevant structural design/analysis roles, preferably in structural steel.
• Preferred experience in temporary stability design and crane planning / rigging expertise.
• Proficiency with structural analysis software (e.g., SAP2000, RISA, RAM)
• Desired experience in REVIT modeling and drawing production.
• Strong understanding of steel construction and erection techniques.
• Detail-oriented with excellent analytical, communication, and problem-solving skills.
• Team-oriented with the ability to collaborate effectively across disciplines.
• Full-time, office based, occasional job site visits.
• Proficiency in software, i.e. Bluebeam, Tekla, Excel and Microsoft Office Suite.
• Ability to read and interpret design drawings and project specifications.
• Capable of managing multiple projects/asks simultaneously while meeting deadlines.
• Works well with a cross-functional team, providing valuable input to ensure project success.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

• Ability to sit for extended periods of time while working at a desk or computer, with regular use of hands and fingers for typing, using a computer mouse, and handling documents.
• Occasional lifting and moving files, supplies, or materials typically up to 40 pounds.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

• Primarily works in a standard office environment with minimal exposure to temperature changes.
• Job site visits as needed will include outdoor environments and/or work from site trailers. Outdoor temperatures are unregulated, meaning depending on the season and location temperatures could be hot or cold in the immediate areas where work assignments must occur.
• Shop visits as needed will include industrial manufacturing environments with heavy machinery, forklifts and overhead cranes.
• Required to wear Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) such head protection, eye protection, and steel-toed footwear in designated areas.
