Job summary

Amentum Space Exploration Division is seeking a Structural Analyst to perform structural strength analysis for non-flight hardware in support of the Space Launch System and related programs at NASA's Marshall Space Flight Center in Huntsville, Alabama.

You will develop FE-based analysis packages, work with design engineers, and prepare reports and presentations for management. Strong communication and FE code proficiency are essential for success in this on-site role.

Qualifications

• PhD/MS/BS with related experience and ABET accreditation preferred.
• Strong analytical and written/verbal communication skills required.
• Proficiency with main FE codes and MS Office tools is expected.

Structural Analyst Position Overview

The Structural Analyst will perform structural strength analysis for non-flight hardware. This work is in support of the Space Launch System (SLS) program as well as other new and existing programs at NASA's Marshall Space Flight Center (MSFC).

Job duties include:

• Development of formal stress analysis packages for ground support and special test equipment using strength of materials and finite element-based methods.
• Interfacing with design engineers to provide inputs to preliminary designs
• Development and delivery of reports and presentations to management
• Collaboration with outside vendors and personnel from other NASA centers in the development of structural hardware

Qualifications:

A degree in Civil, Structural, or Mechanical Engineering or other Engineering field is required. Degree from an ABET accredited institution is preferred. Typically, the educational requirements are a Ph.D. with some experience; MS with at least 3 years of experience, or a BS with at least 8+ years of experience. A STAR/REAL ID is required.

• Proficiency with Microsoft Office products such as PowerPoint, Excel, and Word is required.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills are required.
• Proficiency in one or more of the major commercial finite element codes (e.g., FEMAP, PATRAN, NASTRAN, ABAQUS, or ANSYS).
• Experience in the application of finite element methods and the assessment of failure mechanisms such as rupture, yield, buckling, and fatigue.
• Experience in analysis of joints containing mechanical fasteners or welds.

Essential Functions

Work Environment:

Office environment. Requires ability to provide clear, concise, accurate and timely communication, both verbally and in writing (100%). Requires ability to interact professionally with co-workers, management, and client (100%). Requires travel in the domestic USA (5%). Requires ability to work at a computer for long periods of time (100%).

Physical Requirements:

Requires sitting for extended periods of time in meetings with peers, management, and with our client at NASA facilities to discuss technical issues (10%). Also, requires sitting for extended periods of time at a desk to write reports and perform engineering tasks (80%). Requires ability to use stairs or elevators for access between floors and multiple buildings at NASA and our facilities (10%).

Equipment and Machines:

Requires ability to operate a personal computer, a telephone, fax machine, copier, calculator, and other general office equipment (100%).

Attendance:

Normal workday 7:30-4:30, Monday thru Friday. Minimal overtime may be required (10%) to meet schedule milestones and to support technical demands of the job. Regular attendance is a necessity, and adequate arrangements for delegating duties during absences are required.

Other Essential Functions:

The ability to work independently with minimal supervision, and to make rational decisions, and to exercise good judgment is essential (100%). Grooming and dress must be appropriate for the position and must not impose a safety risk/hazard to the employee or others.
