Rate of Pay: $55,515.20 - $63,495.51
Status: Open Until Filled

This position is a supervisory position within the Public Works Department in the Streets Division. It involves supervising division personnel involved in street, sidewalk, drainage, construction, landscape, and maintenance projects. The supervisor assigns work orders to forepersons based on available personnel, equipment, and material resources and provides administrative support for department activities as needed.

Responsibilities

• Assign work orders to forepersons and coordinate construction and maintenance projects of city streets, walkways, drainage systems, and similar projects.
• Inspect ongoing projects for compliance with plans, division work standards, and safety standards, adjusting as needed.
• Interpret and explain city and department policies and procedures to employees.
• Procure necessary equipment, materials, and supplies for all projects; allocate materials and coordinate delivery with forepersons or suppliers.
• Provide training and technical assistance to forepersons and subordinates on the job site, including a training program for safety and equipment operation; monitor program success and counsel or adjust as needed.
• Maintain accurate written and electronic records in job costs, time management, and inventory control.
• Perform administrative functions for the division including overtime approvals, vacation and leave requests, position requisitioning, interviews for hire, counseling for disciplinary actions, and budget recommendations.
• Advise and report serious disciplinary or performance matters to the Deputy Director of Public Works – Operations.
• Respond to citizen complaints, take corrective action, and follow up to ensure resolution; notify Deputy Director of serious or unresolved complaints.
• Coordinate division projects with other city/BLW departments as appropriate.
• During inclement weather and/or emergencies, work 12‑hour shifts until normal operations resume.
• Perform other related duties as needed.

Preferred Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED and a minimum of 5 years’ experience supervising street repair and maintenance crews at the foreperson or higher level.
• Ability to use a PC and basic applications such as Microsoft Word and Excel for brief letters, job estimation and costing, budgeting, and email communications.
• Class A commercial driver’s license with a satisfactory seven‑year driving history (no DUI’s within the last five years) and ability to pass a physical exam at time of hire.
• Ability to operate and instruct others in the operation of heavy street repair equipment.
• Working knowledge of basic drafting skills and computer-aided drafting systems (AutoCAD).
• Knowledge of safety rules and regulations.
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills and ability to ensure supervisory directives are completed according to plan; maintain positive relations with division subordinates, city/BLW employees, and the public.
• Knowledge of supervisory methods, personnel regulations, including hiring, interviewing, and termination procedures.
• Knowledge of street construction materials and methods of concrete, asphalt, grading, sidewalk construction, curb and gutter construction, laying pipe, and landscaping.
• Knowledge of Georgia DOT standard specifications and practices.
• Knowledge of traffic safety standards (MUTCD).
• Ability to use a desktop computer and basic applications as needed.
• Ability to maintain accurate written and electronic records in job costs, time management, and inventory control.
