The City of Hendersonville, NC is seeking a Streets Maintenance Worker I to perform unskilled and semi-skilled manual labor in the Streets Division of the Public Works Department. Responsible forperforminga variety of unskilled and semi-skilled manual labor tasks and other duties as required within the Streets Division of the Public Works Department.An employee in this class performs routine manual labor in the construction, maintenance, repair and upkeep of streets, sidewalks, stormwater systems,curbs,and gutters. Work is performed under the general supervision of the Street Department Supervisor and is evaluated by visual inspection of work, periodic meetings, compliance with safety procedures, and overall quantity and quality of work performed.
High school diplomaorGED equivalency;someexperiencein general maintenance ofstreets,sidewalks,stormwater systemsis preferredor an equivalent combination of education and experience.
High school diplomaorGED equivalency;and two (2) years of experiencein general maintenanceof Streets, Sidewalks, Stormwater systems or an equivalent combination of education and experience
High school diplomaor GEDequivalent;andfour(4) yearsof experiencein the operation, maintenance,and care of a variety of medium and heavy construction equipment; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Work in this classification is defined as heavy work requiring physicalexertionin excess ofup to 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or in excess 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or in excess 20 pounds of force to move objects.Work requires climbing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, fingering, grasping,handlingand repetitive motions. Work requires dexterity in the hands for typing and operation of standard office equipment and visual acuity is necessary to read handwritten and typewritten materials and to operate a computer terminal. Vocal communication is required to express or exchange ideas. Hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels. Visual acuity is required for depth perception,preparing,and analyzing written or computer data, visual inspection of products, operation of machines, determining the accuracy and thoroughness of work, and observing general surroundings and activities.Employeesmust have the stamina to work for extendedperiods,some of whichare inemergency situations.
Work is primarily performedin outside environmental conditions including extreme heat and cold with snow and ice.Employees aresubject to noise which may cause the employee to shouttobe heard above the ambient noise level.Employees aresubject to vibration, such as exposure to oscillating movements of the extremities or whole body andarealso subject to workplace hazards including proximity to moving mechanical parts or exposure to chemicals, oils, fuels, etc.Employees aresubject to atmospheric conditions due to exposure to fumes, odors, dust,andoils. May work in close quarters, crawl spaces, shafts, manholes, small areas of water lines, and other areas which could cause claustrophobia.
