Job Summary

This position is responsible for the mechanical repair and maintenance of department vehicles and equipment.

Major Duties
  • Performs scheduled and unscheduled repairs, inspections, tune‑ups, and overhauls on automotive and heavy gasoline and diesel equipment, including automobiles, trucks, tractors, rollers, sweepers, loaders, and other light and heavy construction equipment.
  • Diagnoses, adjusts, repairs, and/or replaces hydraulics, fuel systems, brakes, drive trains, transmissions, HVAC systems, steering systems, electrical systems, exhaust systems, wheels, axles, tires, suspension systems, computer and sensor systems, etc.
  • Performs routine preventive maintenance, DOT safety checks, and repairs on city vehicles and equipment, including the repair and replacement of brooms, skids, cutting edges, brakes, lights, batteries, safety equipment, tires, filter, oil, hydraulic fluid, hydraulic hoses, etc.
  • Performs snow and ice control and removal procedures, including plowing, sanding, spreading deicing chemicals, loading trucks, etc.
  • Responds to after‑hours emergencies when on‑call.
  • Maintains daily records of parts, labor, and materials use in the repair and maintenance of vehicles and equipment.
  • Designs, welds, fabricates, and rebuilds specialized equipment and tools; modifies and redesigns existing equipment; repairs and maintains stationary mechanical equipment.
  • Drives a truck to haul material to and from construction job sites.
  • Performs street maintenance duties as needed, including crack sealing, cold mix patching, hot mix patching, chip sealing, and street rebuilds.
  • Attendance is an essential function of this position.
  • Performs related duties.

  • Knowledge of department and city policies and procedures, and relevant federal, state, and local laws and regulations.

Supervisory Controls

The Streets Superintendent and Crew Supervisor assigns work in terms of general instructions. The supervisor spot‑checks completed work for compliance with procedures, accuracy, and the nature and propriety of the final results.

Guidelines

Guidelines include manufacturer maintenance and repair manuals, work safety guidelines, and city and department policies and procedures. These guidelines are generally clear and specific but may require some interpretation in application.

Complexity / Scope of Work
  • The work consists of related equipment maintenance and repair duties. The variety of equipment to be maintained contributes to the complexity of the work.
  • The purpose of this position is to repair and maintain department vehicles and equipment. Successful performance helps ensure the provision of safe and well‑maintained vehicles for a variety of department operations.

  • Contacts are typically with co‑workers, dealers, vendors, and other city employees.
  • Contacts are typically to exchange information, resolve problems, and provide services.
Physical Demands / Work Environment
  • The work is typically performed while intermittently sitting, standing, or stooping, walking, bending, or crouching. The employee frequently lifts light and heavy objects, climbs ladders, uses tools or equipment requiring a high degree of dexterity, distinguishes between shades of color, and utilizes the sense of smell.
  • The work is typically performed in a garage, stockroom, and outdoors, occasionally in cold or inclement weather. The employee may be exposed to noise, dust, dirt, grease, machinery with moving parts, contagious or infectious diseases, or irritating chemicals. Work requires the use of protective devices such as masks, goggles, gloves, etc.
Supervisory and Management Responsibility

None.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Knowledge and level of competency commonly associated with completion of specialized training in the field of work, in addition to basic skills typically associated with a high school education.
  • Sufficient experience to understand the basic principles relevant to the major duties of the position, usually associated with the completion of an apprenticeship/internship or having had a similar position for one to two years.
  • Possession of or ability to readily obtain a valid Class A commercial driver’s license issued by the State of South Dakota.
Qualifications (additional)

The work consists of diagnosing, troubleshooting, and performing preventive maintenance on vehicles and equipment. Welding and inventory management experience beneficial. Must have possession of or ability to obtain a Class A CDL with air brakes and tanker endorsements and be able to work in inclement weather conditions.
