City Of Schertz is seeking a Street Maintenance Worker Trainee to perform semi-skilled tasks in street, sidewalk and signage upkeep, operating basic grounds equipment and assisting crew leaders in daily assignments.

This municipal role requires reliability, ability to follow safety procedures, and willingness to learn from experienced technicians; on-call duties may be required during events or emergencies.

Qualifications

• High School Diploma or GED required.
• Must have a valid “B” Texas Commercial Driver’s license or be able to obtain one within six (6) months of hire.

Responsabilités

• Operates and maintains grounds keeping equipment such as mowers, weed eaters, chainsaws, and chippers to maintain City streets, sidewalks, curbs, gutters, signage and other assigned areas.
• Operates and maintains City trucks and trailers.
• Excavates and back-fills trenches and other areas with hand tools.
• Operates earth moving equipment such as dump trucks, backhoes and loaders to maintain and repair City streets, sidewalks, curbs, gutters, alleys, right of ways, signage and other assigned areas.
• Operates material handling equipment such as forklifts, loaders, trucks, dump trucks and trailers.
• Follows procedures for safe and effective work zone and traffic control when required.
• Performs other job-related duties as required.

Formation

POSITION SUMMARY

This is a semi-skilled and/or skilled position in the construction, maintenance and repair of city streets, sidewalks, curbs, sign installation and fabrication. May have limited responsibility for: the preparation of reports and records; daily contact with the public requiring tact, diplomacy and professionalism; may make numerous work decisions weekly, varying in complexity; may have limited supervisory assignments; reports Streets Maintenance crew activity daily. This position may be filled as a Worker Trainee, Worker I or II and may perform as a leader of a crew or crews.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

• Operates and maintains grounds keeping equipment such as mowers, weed eaters, chainsaws, and chippers to maintain City streets, sidewalks, curbs, gutters, signage and other assigned areas.
• Operates and maintains City trucks and trailers
• Excavates and back-fills trenches and other areas with hand tools
• Operates earth moving equipment such as dump trucks, trailers, backhoes and loaders to maintain and repair City streets, sidewalks, curbs, gutters, alleys, right of ways, signage and other assigned areas.
• Operates material handling equipment such as forklifts, loaders, trucks, dump trucks and trailers.
• Loads and unloads construction materials, bench stock supplies and others as assigned.
• Operates specialty equipment such as street sweepers, crack sealers, rollers, asphalt patch trucks, paint stripers and asphalt zippers.
• Follows procedures for safe and effective work zone and traffic control when required.
• Follows procedures for safe handling and application of pesticides and other hazardous chemicals.
• Works cooperatively with Sign Technicians maintaining, fabricating and installing new signs.
• Follows procedures for lock-out-tag-out of equipment.
• Operates power tools and light construction equipment.
• Performs rough carpentry, painting, and concrete work.
• Performs scheduled vehicle and equipment inspections and records maintenance actions on proper forms.
• Records traffic control device maintenance actions on proper forms.Records work performed and man-hour expenditures on work orders.
• Assists other Public Work Divisions/City Departments when requested.
• Participates in on-call schedules and duties.
• On-call duties during City-wide events, extenuating circumstances and emergencies (weather related or other) may be extended to all Public Works personnel. 1
• Performs other job-related duties as required.

Worker II (In addition to the duties and responsibilities above)

• Coordinates, supervises and performs “On the Job Training” and City Safety Programs.
• Maintains inventories related to division equipment and supplies.
• Familiarization with City of Schertz Code of Ordinances, as well as other streets and transportation infrastructure standards and specification codes.
• Assumes the duties of their supervisor in his/her absence.
• Good Housekeeping and organization of tools, equipment, vehicles and work area.
• Assures crews are organized and ready to complete task at hand.
• Application of pesticides and proper handling and use of other chemicals.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS

Worker Trainee, Worker I:

• High School Diploma or GED
