Job summary

The City of Champaign is seeking a Street Maintenance Worker II to join the Public Works team. You will operate heavy equipment and perform manual and skilled tasks to maintain streets, alleys, rights-of-ways, and City-owned infrastructure.

Expect outdoor work, variable hours, and occasional 16-hour shifts with short notice. Qualifications include a high school diploma or equivalent, plus experience with street maintenance, weather resilience, and a valid driver's license.

Qualifications

• Education equivalent to a high school diploma or equivalent.
• Experience in the maintenance and repair of streets, rights-of-ways, alleys or relevant heavy equipment operation experience.
• Ability to work outdoors in adverse weather conditions.
• Ability to work emergency operations outside of normal working hours.
• A valid state issued driver’s license and an acceptable driving record.
• Illinois Class B CDL license without air brake restriction within the timeframe approved by the Streets Supervisor.
• Ability to obtain an Illinois Pesticide License.
• Ability to use mobile devices and/or computers for web and computer-based applications.
• Experience with snow and ice removal.
• Experience with special event setup and tear down.

Responsibilities

• Operate Public Works heavy equipment (dump trucks, backhoes, loaders, street sweepers) and small tools to sweep streets and repair shoulders.
• Sweep streets, maintain alleys, mow rights-of-ways and City-owned lots, and provide weed control.
• Perform snow and ice removal, assist with yard waste collection, and respond to emergencies on short notice.
• Support special events with setup and teardown as needed.

The Street Maintenance Worker II is part of a team that performs manual and skilled work in the repair and maintenance of streets, alleys, rights-of-ways, and other City owned infrastructure. They operate heavy equipment (e.g., dump trucks; backhoes; front-end loaders; street sweepers; batwing, zero turn, and slope mowers; graders; and skid steers), small equipment, and small tools to sweep streets, repair shoulders, maintain alleys, mowing rights-of-ways and City-owned lots, perform weed control, and provide special event support. They participate in the City's snow & ice removal efforts and respond to other emergencies and callouts that may require working up to 16-hour shifts at all hours, with little to no advance notice, and also assist with the yard waste collection program.

Maintenance Worker positions may be filled at the I or II level. Level II positions require the ability to operate Public Works equipment on a regular basis without supervision. Newly hired or current employees who are promoted, transferred, or voluntarily demoted to Maintenance Worker positions will be paid at the Maintenance Worker I level until successfully demonstrating equipment operation competency through proficiency testing or completion of the Public Works Department training program.

• Ability to work outdoors in adverse weather conditions.
• Ability to work emergency operations outside of normal working hours.
• A valid state issued driver’s license and an acceptable driving record.
• A State of Illinois Class B CDL license without air brake restriction is required within a timeframe approved by the Streets Supervisor.
• Ability to perform essential functions that require physical agility as noted in the job description, with or without accommodation.

Drug screening, driving record review, and ongoing random drug testing will be required. The starting salary is $29.89 - $32.33 per hour, accompanied by an excellent fringe benefit summary.
