Job summary

Job description

Target Hiring Range: $22.52- $25.02

The purpose of this position to perform semi-skilled and skilled labor in the construction, maintenance, repair and related service activities related to streets, sidewalk, storm drain, sign, traffic marking and to operate construction equipment as required.

Duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Work as part of a streets maintenance crew; patch pavement and seal cracks; remove graffiti; perform bikeway maintenance.
  • Construct forms; pours and finishes concrete.
  • Operate construction equipment such as dump trucks, rollers, motor graders, front loaders, 10-yard rotary mix truck, excavators, forklifts, aerial lift trucks, backhoe, asphalt paver, hydro/vacuum trucks, sweepers and power tools such as compressors, rotor hammers, jack hammers, paint sprayers, asphalt grinders, and concrete saws.
  • Clean up debris from walkways, ditches, alleys and streets; perform work in emergency situations as required.
  • Inspect and clear obstructions from storm drains. Identify equipment needs for each assigned project.
  • Pick up and transport debris and refuse to each dumping site as required.
  • Maintain markings, traffic signs, and guardrails.
  • Utilize proper safety precautions related to all work performed.
  • Install street barricades and cones prior to the performance of street repair activities; direct and control traffic around work sites.
  • Transport equipment/materials to job site.
  • Build and maintain positive working relationships with co-workers, other City employees, and the public, using principles of good customer service.
  • Perform related duties as assigned.
  • Requires eighth grade education plus five years in a related field or high school equivalency.
  • Two years of experience operating light, median and heavy equipment.

Employment is conditional upon successful completion of a criminal background check, and must pass a DOT-regulated drug/alcohol test and successfully complete the FMCSA Clearinghouse background check process.

Work requires knowledge necessary to understanding basic operational and technical processes required to maintain and service check equipment used in street maintenance.

Requires a comprehensive, practical knowledge of street maintenance with the use of analytical judgment and decision making abilities appropriate to the work environment of the organization.

Special Requirements

Ability and willingness to work flexible hours and weekends and holidays as needed. Subject to on-call rotation.

Licenses and Certificates

Requires a valid driver’s license “C” on date of employment. Must obtain a minimum of a class “B” commercial driving license within 6 months of employment.

Work Environment

Work involves extreme exposure to disagreeable elements, and extreme weather conditions, involves continuous outdoor work with frequent exposure to poor weather conditions. Physical demands include frequent lifting of heavy object. Continuous physical exertion, requiring heavy muscular effort with resulting fatigue of arms, back or sensory facilities. Sufficient physical stamina to walk a majority of the work day. Extensive bending, stooping and climbing.
