City of Pierre is seeking a Maintenance Worker to operate street sweepers, snow plows, and related equipment to maintain city streets. The role is outdoors and requires regular equipment handling and basic maintenance tasks.

The position requires the ability to read/write and to obtain a valid SD driver’s license; a CDL is required. The wage starts at $23.82 per hour with benefits including health, retirement, holidays, and educational assistance.

Responsibilities

Operates a street sweeper to clean streets and city parking lots.
Loads trucks with sand or gravel and transports to work sites and/or landfill with front-end loader; smooths jobsites with loader.
Removes snow from streets and parking lots.
Operates roller to seal city streets; fills water trucks at fire hydrants.
Provides routine maintenance of equipment by performing such duties as checking oil and fluid levels.
Patches potholes with asphalt.
Operates sanding truck and backhoe as necessary.
Performs janitorial duties and lighthousekeeping as necessary.
Performs other related duties as assigned.

The Street Superintendent or HeavyEquipment Operator/Crew Leader assigns work in terms of somewhat generalinstructions.The work is reviewed foraccuracy, compliance with instructions and established procedures, and thenature and propriety of the final results.

GUIDELINES:

Guidelines include department and safetyrules and regulations, work orders, and supervisory instructions.These guidelines are generally clear andspecific, but may require some interpretation in application.

COMPLEXITY:

The work consists of street maintenanceduties.Inclement weather and the needto work around traffic contribute to the complexity of the work.

SCOPEAND EFFECT:

The purpose of this position is to maintain city streets.Successful performance helps ensure safe streets and enhances the public image of the city.

PHYSICALDEMANDS:

The work is typically performedwhile intermittently sitting, standing, stooping, bending, crouching, orwalking.The employee must frequentlylift light and heavy objects, climb ladders, and use tools or equipmentrequiring a high degree of dexterity.

WORKENVIRONMENT:

The work is performedoutdoors.The employee is exposed tonoise, dust, dirt, grease, machinery with moving parts, irritating chemicals,and occasional inclement weather.Thework requires the use of protective devices such as masks, goggles, or gloves.

SUPERVISORYAND MANAGEMENT RESPONSIBILITY:

None.

MINIMUMQUALIFICATIONS:

Ability to read, write and perform basicmathematical calculations.
Sufficient experience to understand the basicprinciples relevant to the major duties of the position, usually associatedwith the completion of an apprenticeship/internship or having had a similarposition for one to two years.
Possession of or ability to readily obtain a valid driver’s license issued by the State of South Dakota for the type of vehicle or equipment operated. A CDL is required for this position.
