Hiring Range

Negotiable between $33,119 and $42,724 depending on a candidate's qualifications and experience.

Job Description

Performs a variety of unskilled to semi-skilled manual labor tasks to maintain the City’s streets and sidewalks. Familiarity with concrete and asphalt applications is preferred. Responsibilities include preparing and forming concrete for sidewalks, curbs, gutters, and pads, as well as repairing potholes and utility cuts with cold patch and hot asphalt. Work involves labor-intensive tasks using basic hand, gas, electric, and pneumatic tools such as shovels, rakes, chain saws, jackhammers, and concrete saws. Employees may assist with concrete and asphalt work, operate non-specialized equipment, and maintain operational equipment and work records.

Essential Duties
  1. Support street and sidewalk maintenance through manual labor tasks.
  2. Operate basic tools and equipment required for maintenance tasks.
  3. Occasionally operate equipment like backhoes, skid steers, loaders, and dump trucks.
  4. Maintain machinery and complete daily checks and preventative maintenance.
  5. Assist with concrete and asphalt work, including saw cutting, material removal, base preparation, form setting, mixing, pouring, and finishing.
  6. Drive passenger trucks for hauling equipment, materials, and personnel.
  7. Assist with cleaning ditches and catch basins, grading dirt streets.
  8. Follow safety practices and set up safe work zones.
  9. Support work during natural disasters or weather events and perform on-call duties as needed.
  10. Maintain logs and reports, input data using computer software.
  11. Assist other departments and perform related duties as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Knowledge of tools, materials, and methods for street and sidewalk maintenance.
  • Knowledge of equipment operation and maintenance.
  • Understanding of occupational hazards and safety precautions.
  • Skill in operating maintenance tools and equipment.
  • Ability to follow instructions and perform manual labor.
  • Ability to establish effective working relationships and work as part of a team.
  • Courteous communication with citizens.
Physical Demands

Heavy work requiring exerting up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or 50 pounds frequently, and/or 20 pounds constantly. Physical activities include climbing, crouching, kneeling, manual dexterity, hearing, reaching, repetitive motion, speaking, stooping, walking, and visual acuity.

Work Environment

Work is performed indoors and outdoors, in extreme weather conditions, and involves exposure to hazards like traffic, chemicals, moving parts, oils, confined spaces, and trenches. PPE such as masks, coats, boots, goggles, gloves, or shields are required.

Minimum Requirements
  • High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • One year of experience in related maintenance work.
  • Or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Special Requirements
  • Possession of a valid North Carolina Class “B” Commercial Driver’s License or ability to obtain within six months of hire.
