Job summary

Lawrence University Department of Theatre Arts seeks a University Counsel and Assistant Secretary to the Board of Trustees in Appleton, Wisconsin. This position is responsible for providing strategic legal guidance to the President and the Board, ensuring compliance and governance, and managing legal risks. The ideal candidate must hold a J.D., have a strong background in higher education law, and possess exceptional communication and negotiation skills.

The selected individual will play a crucial role in supporting the University’s mission, drafting legal documents, and advising on complex legal matters.

Qualifications

• 7–10 years of progressively responsible legal experience.
• Demonstrated experience in higher education law.
• Eligibility to obtain Wisconsin bar licensure within 12 months of hire.

Responsibilities

• Provides expert legal opinions, advice, and counsel on various matters.
• Monitors and advises on evolving policies impacting higher education.
• Advises the Board of Trustees on nonprofit law and governance practices.
• Develops and implements a comprehensive system for contract review.
