JPMorgan Chase & Co. in Palo Alto is seeking a Lead Software Engineer for the Commercial & Investment Bank Payments team. You will lead cross‑functional technology initiatives across departments, design systems, and drive incident readiness in a highly matrixed organization.

The role emphasizes hands‑on coding, hiring and developing talent, and delivering scalable solutions in cloud‑native environments, with strong emphasis on observability and platform reliability.

Qualifications

• Formal software engineering training or certification, plus 5+ years of hands-on experience.
• Experience leading complex initiatives involving system design, testing, and operational resilience.
• Experience hiring, developing, and recognizing talent.
• Deep practical experience in cloud-native environments.
• Strong grounding in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Mathematics, or a related technical discipline.
• Experience working at code level.

Responsibilities

• Lead multiple technology and process implementations across departments to support firmwide technology goals.
• Oversee multiple areas with a strategic, transactional focus.
• Provide leadership and senior-level direction to teams across multiple platforms, divisions, and lines of business.
• Serve as the main point of contact for senior leaders, stakeholders, and executives, building alignment across competing priorities.
• Manage multiple stakeholders, complex initiatives, and large cross-product partnerships.
• Set observability standards for the TDO function so our teams are certified on the platforms needed to diagnose incidents in real time, including distributed tracing, metrics, log aggregation, and infrastructure monitoring.
• Work with the Observability and Platform teams to close diagnostic tooling gaps identified through TDO retrospectives, including missing traces, metric blind spots, log-retention gaps, and receiver-side alerting coverage.
• Partner with Major Incident Management to maintain clear role separation and joint decision-making between the Incident Commander and the TDO during bridge calls.
• Represent the TDO function to Engineering Leadership, Risk & Controls, Regulatory Response, and Business Continuity so we stay aligned on severity thresholds and reporting duties.
