Job summary

City of Bay City is seeking a Full Time Community Development Planner to support the Planning and Zoning Department in community planning, zoning, and historic preservation initiatives.

The role involves preparing reports, assisting with the Master Plan and zoning updates, and coordinating with boards and commissions. Evening meetings may be required, and the ideal candidate will bring strong written and oral communication skills, plus relevant planning experience.

Qualifications

• Knowledge of community and historic preservation principles and public-sector planning.
• Ability to interpret city zoning, land use, and related ordinances.
• Experience with research and planning for historic preservation issues.
• Ability to apply National Register of Historic Places criteria in decision-making.
• Ability to use computer software for written and graphic communication.

Responsibilities

• Prepare and present reports and recommendations for community planning projects using relevant data.
• Assist revisions to the City Master Plan, Zoning Ordinance, and Historic District Ordinance.
• Participate in Local Update of Census Addresses program and Census Count Committee.
• Serve as liaison to Zoning Board of Appeals and Historic District Commission; assist others as needed.
• Support the City's Certified Local Government Program with the Michigan State Historic Preservation Office.
