Job summary

Cumberland County is seeking a Communications Director to lead the Public Information Office and align departmental messaging with the county’s mission. The role requires strategic thinking, strong leadership, and experience communicating to diverse communities, including military populations.

The successful candidate will build collaborative relationships across departments, partners, and media to increase public engagement and trust, while guiding proactive public affairs and crisis

Qualifications

• Master’s degree in communications, journalism, public administration, marketing with 5 years of progressively responsible leadership in communications.

Responsibilities

• Directs the strategic planning, organization, and daily operations of the Public Information Office to ensure effective and consistent delivery of communications services
• Establishes departmental goals, objectives, and performance measures aligned with County leadership and professional standards
• Leads short- and long-term communications planning to support the County’s strategic mission and priorities
• Develops, reviews, and updates public information policies, procedures, and practices for accuracy and consistency
• Oversees the departmental budget, staffing, technology, and resources for communications operations
• Ensures timely, accurate, and effective communication for departments, employees, and the public
• Develops executive communications, speeches, talking points, and media materials
