Job summary

The Horizon Texas Conference of The United Methodist Church seeks a Chief Financial Officer to lead financial strategy, budgeting, and safeguarding of financial resources across our churches, camps, and mission partners. The role reports to the senior leadership team and includes responsibility for pension and health plans, audits, and financial reporting.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance, business administration, or a closely related field.
• At least seven years of progressively responsible financial management experience, including a minimum of five years in fund or nonprofit accounting.
• At least five years of supervisory experience leading professional staff, including hiring, performance management, and development.
• Demonstrated command of nonprofit accounting, financial reporting, budgeting, internal controls, audit management, and restricted‑fund compliance.
• Experience presenting financial information to boards, committees, or governing bodies composed largely of non‑financial volunteers.

Responsibilities

• Strategic Financial Leadership: serve as the chief financial advisor and develop multi-year forecasts and reserve strategies.
• Accounting, Treasury, and Internal Control: oversee accounting operations, treasury, internal controls, and GAAP compliance.
• Budget Development and Mission Share Stewardship: prepare and manage conference budget and apportionment methodology.
• Pension and Benefits: oversee pension and health plans for clergy and lay employees.
• Trustees, Property, and Risk: support Trustees with investments and property activity and manage risk across the conference.
• Statistics, Data, and Reporting Integrity: produce annual reports and assist local churches with statistical reporting.
• Team Leadership and Development: lead Stewardship Team staff and contractors; foster development and cross-training.
• Governance Support and Local Church Partnership: support CF&A and provide training to local churches.
