Job summary

University of California, Berkeley is seeking an Associate Vice Chancellor for Government & Community Relations to advance institutional priorities through government and community engagement. The role requires strategic leadership, policy analysis, and high-stakes stakeholder management to support the Chancellor’s Office and campus leadership.

The AVC GCR will supervise a team, coordinate with UCOP on issues, and shape advocacy strategies across local, state, federal, and Tribal governments.

Qualifications

• Advanced knowledge of local, state, federal, and Tribal governmental structures and public policy development.
• Demonstrated experience in strategic government or public affairs initiatives.
• Strong political acumen and ability to navigate sensitive, evolving issues.
• Excellent written, verbal, presentation, and interpersonal communication skills.
• Experience advising senior leadership and managing complex relationships.

Responsibilities

• Develop and implement comprehensive government relations strategies that support institutional priorities.
• Lead a team representing the University before local, state, federal, and Tribal entities and communities.
• Monitor policy developments and advise campus leadership on implications and actions.
• Build and sustain relationships with elected officials, agencies, Tribal leaders, and advocacy groups.
• Coordinate advocacy efforts related to legislative, budgetary, and regulatory matters.
• Support campus leadership with briefing materials and policy recommendations.
