Position Overview

Reporting to the Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs, the Assistant Vice Chancellor for Student Engagement (AVCSE) is an executive strategic partner for the Student Affairs organization with a focus on enhancing the student experience, increasing student success, and supporting overall campus engagement. The AVCSE directs complex critical programs and often serves as the decision‑maker in the absence of the Vice Chancellor. The AVCSE frequently represents the entire Student Affairs organization at campus and community events, conferences, and while serving on internal and external committees.

The AVCSE will provide executive level leadership of the Student Affairs organization and is accountable for budget, financial oversight, and human resource management of the following units: Student Life (including New Student and Transfer Programs), Sorority & Fraternity Life and other Student Organizations, University Highlander Pep Band and Spirits & Traditions, Student Leadership/Development and Community Service, Associated Students Program board (ASPB), Associated Students UC Riverside (ASUCR), Graduate Student Association (GSA), Student Media, UCR Student Recreation Center, KUCR Radio, Career Center.

Has significant responsibility for and is expected to lead organization‑wide initiatives, decisions, and policy matters involving students and student engagement throughout the organization and University. Programs under the leadership of the AVCSE affect major aspects of the academic and non‑academic life for students, such as career development, community service, fraternity and sorority life, leadership development, new and transfer student programs (Orientation), and student organization advising.

The AVCSE will work with one of the most diverse student bodies in the nation and must possess a passion for, and knowledge of, inclusion, equity, and social justice to be responsible for high‑risk departments with sensitive issues and concerns pertaining to student programs, diversity programs, and crisis management.

Key Responsibilities
  • Provide executive‑level leadership and strategic direction for the Student Affairs organization.
  • Direct complex critical programs and act as decision‑maker in the absence of the Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs.
  • Represent Student Affairs at campus and community events, conferences, and on internal and external committees.
  • Accountable for the budget, financial oversight, and human resource management of approximately $15 million and over 82 FTE across multiple units.
  • Lead organization‑wide initiatives, decisions, and policy matters involving student engagement.
  • Ensure that programming supports career development, community service, leadership development, new and transfer student orientation, and student organization advising.
  • Promote a culture of student engagement and success and continuously represent Student Affairs to the broader university community.
  • Address high‑risk departments and sensitive issues related to diversity, equity, social justice, and crisis management.
Requirements
  • Must have current work authorization upon accepting a UCR staff position; the university is unable to sponsor or take over employment visa sponsorship.

  • Experience in higher education Student Affairs or equivalent, with a track record of managing multiple programs and a diverse student population.
