Job summary

Senator Sarasota County is seeking a seasoned Stormwater Operations Leader to oversee daily activities and emergency responses for a 35–40 person team. You’ll manage an $18 million annual budget, coordinate equipment, and collaborate with engineering and services on staffing and planning.

The role reports to the Stormwater Director and offers pay between $95,000 and $112,000 annually, with relocation support and benefits after 60 days.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in construction, engineering, or related field with 6+ years of related experience
• Master’s degree in construction, engineering, or related field with 4+ years of related experience
• Four (4) or more years of supervisory/management experience and valid Florida driver’s license

Responsibilities

• Provide leadership and oversight for stormwater operations including daily functions and emergency response.
• Supervise field crews and supervisory staff; coordinate activities.
• Plan, schedule, and manage routine maintenance and operational activities.
• Staff staffing and deploy personnel and equipment for scheduled and emergency work.
• Monitor workload distribution, crew assignments, and equipment utilization.
• Ensure compliance with county, state, and OSHA regulations; uphold safety.
• Develop long-range maintenance plans; support stormwater initiatives with engineering.
• Prepare operating budgets and manage expenditures and resource allocation.
• Conduct performance evaluations and disciplinary actions.
• Manage materials, supplies, and inventory; deliver training programs

Job description

Are you a seasoned leader ready to take charge of stormwater operations across Sarasota County? In this high-level management role, you’ll supervise 35–40 staff members and oversee daily activities for work crews handling routine maintenance, emergency response, and special projects.

You’ll manage about an $18 million annual budget, coordinate equipment and resources, ensure safety, and work closely with engineering teams and core business services on staffing, budgeting, training, and operational planning. Reporting directly to the Stormwater Director, your leadership will directly influence the efficiency, safety, and success of critical stormwater operations.

The pay starts between $95,000.00 – $112,000.00/ annually (based on experience), and benefits begin within 60 days of hire.

Up to $3,000 relocation is available for those moving 50+ miles to join the premier community where people choose to live, work, and play!

About the Position

Make an Impact Leading Stormwater Operations:

• Provide leadership and oversight for stormwater operations, including daily functions and emergency response
• Supervise and coordinate activities of field crews and supervisory staff
• Plan, schedule, and manage routine maintenance and operational activities
• Coordinate staffing and deploy personnel and equipment for scheduled and emergency work
• Monitor workload distribution, crew assignments, and equipment utilization
• Ensure compliance with county, state, and OSHA regulations, including safety procedures and equipment use
• Deliver excellent customer service and maintain strong relationships with residents, agencies, and internal departments
• Collaborate with internal teams, manage interlocal agreements, and coordinate external vendors and resources
• Develop long-range maintenance plans and support stormwater initiatives in partnership with engineering teams
• Monitor, evaluate, and improve operational efficiency, recommending adjustments as needed
• Prepare and manage operating budgets, expenditures, business plans, and resource allocation
• Assess staffing needs, support hiring processes, and conduct performance evaluations and disciplinary actions
• Manage materials, supplies, and inventory to support operations
• Develop and deliver training programs for staff

About You

Minimum Qualifications:

• Bachelor’s degree in construction, engineering , orrelated fieldANDsix (6) years of progressively responsible related experience
• -OR-master’s degree in construction, engineering , orrelated fieldANDfour (4) or more years of related experience
• -OR-May consider substituting years of experience for the four (4) year degree
• -AND-Four (4) or more years ofsupervisory/managementexperience
• Valid Florida driver’s license at the time of hire

Preferred Qualifications:

• Knowledge of current principles and practices relating to utility operations and maintenance
• Knowledge of applicable federal, state, and local policies and regulations related to wastewater and stormwater management
• Knowledge of the health and safety hazards and precautions associated with the work performed in the section
• Proficient in Microsoft Office applications, including Excel, Word, and Outlook
