Job summary

Habitat for Humanity of Greater Charlottesville is seeking a part‑time Retail Associate at The Habitat Store in Charlottesville, VA. You will process donations, supervise volunteers, and provide outstanding customer service to donors and shoppers.

The role requires experience in retail, a professional demeanor, and the ability to work with volunteers. Spanish language skills are a plus. A valid driver's license is preferred as duties may include driving donations on occasion.

Qualifications

• Experience in retail sales.

• General knowledge of carpentry and basic maintenance beneficial.

Responsibilities

• Screen donations for acceptability and unload donations efficiently.
• Process donations and prepare items for display.
• Load customer purchases safely and professionally.
• Provide friendly customer service on the sales floor.
• Plan and supervise daily volunteer tasks with coordinators.
• Train and supervise volunteers and groups.
• Keep store and warehouse clean and stocked.
• Make minor repairs to donations as needed.
• Convey Habitat’s mission to customers and volunteers.
• Adhere to safety procedures and store policies.

Job Location: Habitat Store - Charlottesville, VA 22903
Position Type: Part Time
Salary Range: $16.00 - $16.00 hourly
Part‑time (20 hours per week) position, schedule Tues – Sat

Position Summary

The Retail Associate processes donations, maintains and organizes work areas, leads volunteers, and supports retail operations at The Habitat Store, providing superior customer service and professionalism.

Duties and Responsibilities

• Screen community member drop‑off donations for acceptability and unload professionally and efficiently
• Ensure donation processing systems are implemented and items are prepared for display
• Load customer purchases safely and professionally
• Provide friendly, professional, and personalized customer service on the sales floor to drive sales and ensure an optimal customer/donor experience
• Work with Warehouse Coordinator, Volunteer Coordinator, and Store Manager to plan/implement daily volunteer tasks and ensure a positive volunteer experience
• Effectively train and supervise volunteers and volunteer groups
• Maintain an exceptionally clean store and warehouse through sweeping, proper merchandising, and diligent housekeeping
• Ensure that the store, donation area, and warehouse are appropriately stocked with supplies at all times with input from Store Assistant Manager or Operations Manager
• Make miscellaneous repairs to damaged but valuable donations
• Be knowledgeable about Habitat’s mission and convey it effectively to customers, donors, and volunteers
• Adhere to safety procedures and ensure a safe environment for customers, donors, staff, and volunteers
• Adhere to all store policies and procedures
• Perform other duties as assigned by Warehouse Coordinator, Store Manager, or Operations Manager

Qualifications and Experience

• Experience in retail sales
• Professional demeanor and attitude befitting a public representative of Habitat for Humanity of Greater Charlottesville
• Ability to work well with volunteers and supervise them effectively
• Knowledge of the Google platform
• High level of strategic thinking
• Professional appearance at all times befitting the public face of Habitat
• Driver’s License and insurable driving record
• General knowledge of carpentry, HVAC, plumbing, electrical, types of wood, etc. (preferred)
• Basic knowledge of power tools (preferred)
• Bilingual (Spanish) (preferred)

Physical Requirements

• Ability to lift 50 lbs consistently; 75 lbs occasionally, and be on feet for long periods of time in extreme temperatures
• Prolonged periods of talking, standing, walking
• Ability to climb ladders to add or remove merchandise from shelving or chains hanging from the ceiling
