Job description

Reports To: Retail Operations Director
Collaborates With: Internal Operations Manager, Processing Center Manager, Volunteer Coordinator, Programs Director

The Retail Store Manager at St. Vincent de Paul Northern Kentucky provides hands-on leadership to store operations with a deep commitment to the values of service, dignity, and compassion. This is a highly visible, floor-based leadership role, focused on real-time team support, customer experience, operational execution, and cross-functional collaboration.

The Store Manager ensures that every customer, donor, team member, volunteer, and neighbor in need experiences a welcoming, values-driven environment. Success in this role is not only measured by financial and operational outcomes, but by how effectively the store advances SVdP's mission, providing tangible support to neighbors in need and creating a dignified, welcoming space for all. By fostering teamwork, accountability, and excellence in service, the Store Manager plays a vital role in advancing our mission to serve those in need across Northern Kentucky.

Key Responsibilities
  • Welcome all customers and donors with warmth, professionalism, and gratitude that reflects our Vincentian values
  • Communicate the mission-driven impact of purchases, donations, and assistance programs to foster connection, and ensure neighbors are treated with dignity and respect
  • Resolve customer concerns respectfully and in alignment with SVdP values
  • Lead by example in store operations, modeling responsibility, service, and mutual respect.
  • Recruit, train, and support a cohesive team, including Assistant Managers, Key Holders, Retail Associates, and Retail Donation Associates.
  • Coach and support team members through visible, real-time leadership on the floor, reinforcing high service standards and compassionate care for neighbors, customers, and volunteers.
  • Oversee staff scheduling to ensure adequate coverage and adherence to budgeted labor hours; may delegate scheduling but retains accountability for outcomes.
  • Approve team PTO requests and ensure accurate, timely timesheet submissions.
  • Ensure staff receive appropriate meal and rest breaks in compliance with policy and labor standards.
  • Document and address employee performance issues, recognize accomplishments, and support staff development.
  • Mentor high-potential staff for leadership and career development.
  • Model and enforce workplace policies and procedures consistently to support a respectful and productive team culture.
Retail Operations
  • Oversee daily sales, inventory, merchandising, and store presentation to ensure a clean, well-organized, and mission-aligned shopping experience.
  • Develop and implement store-specific strategies to increase customer base, expand community awareness, and optimize sales.
  • Drive store performance by monitoring sales trends and proactively adjusting layout, staffing, and promotions.
  • Accountable for achieving or exceeding weekly, monthly, and annual sales goals aligned with organizational targets.
  • Leverage sales data and reporting tools to inform decisions and share performance insights with leadership.
  • Ensure accurate cash handling, register balancing, and completion of daily closeout and deposit procedures.
  • Monitor and manage supply orders, labor costs, and store expenses to ensure fiscal responsibility and alignment with budget goals.

Note: Donation flow and processing support may vary by location. Only the Erlanger store has a dedicated Processing Center Manager. All other stores rely solely on the Store Manager, Assistant Manager, and Keyholder to manage donations. In these locations, the Store Manager is directly responsible for coordinating donation intake, processing, sorting, and placement, in addition to merchandising. Managers are expected to tailor donation workflows based on location, store size, layout, and staffing.

Safety & Compliance
  • Ensure the store environment meets safety, cleanliness, and accessibility standards
  • Oversee compliance with SVdP policies and procedures for staff, volunteers, and customers
  • Lead efforts in loss prevention, inventory control, and incident response as needed
Collaboration with Internal Operations Manager
  • Support in-store marketing, signage, and event execution in coordination with the Internal Operations Manager (IOM)
  • Use IOM-provided communication tools and promotional materials to enhance presentation and share the SVdP mission
  • Help maintain accurate store documentation, procedures, and supply inventory aligned with organizational goals
  • Understand volunteer roles and shift schedules to ensure tasks align with daily store needs
  • Ensure volunteers are properly prepared for shifts by creating task lists, providing necessary task-specific training, and ensuring volunteers are supervised - either directly or by a designated employee.
  • Assist volunteers with clock-in/out procedures, and report any time tracking issues to the Volunteer Coordinator
  • Provide real-time coaching as needed and consult the Volunteer Coordinator for support with ongoing concerns
  • Collaborate with the Volunteer Coordinator to ensure all volunteers are welcomed, clearly guided, and meaningfully engaged throughout their shift
  • Coordinate with the Volunteer Coordinator to prepare for scheduled group volunteers, including task planning and supervision
  • When the Volunteer Coordinator or Advancement Team is unavailable, welcome the group, assign tasks, provide basic orientation, and collect any waivers supplied by Volunteer Services
  • Maintain engagement and supervision for recurring groups (e.g., school service programs) after their initial shift, with support from Volunteer Services
Collaboration with Programs Team
  • Lead by example in promoting dignity, hope, and compassion during all customer and community interactions
  • Respond appropriately when neighbors in need visit the store; provide resource information or direct them to the Help Line or Resource Directory as needed
  • Collaborate with the Programs team during seasonal or special programming efforts, helping facilitate store-level execution
  • Stay informed about SVdP programs and ensure team members are aware of updates or changes

  • Ensure the store operates efficiently and mission-aligned by overseeing daily sales, inventory flow, merchandising, and team coverage; ensure store presentation and customer service meet organizational standards.

  • Foster a mission-driven, respectful team culture by modeling Vincentian values, supporting staff development, and maintaining high team engagement and retention through consistent coaching and accountability.
  • Meet or exceed weekly, monthly, and annual sales goals, while ensuring accurate cash handling, register balancing, and adherence to labor budget expectations.
  • Maintain a clean, safe, and welcoming retail environment by enforcing safety protocols, maintaining accessibility, and upholding cleanliness standards in all customer-facing and operational areas.
  • Support meaningful volunteer engagement by preparing daily task assignments, ensuring volunteers are trained and supervised, and collaborating with the Volunteer Coordinator to facilitate individual and group volunteer shifts.
