Job summary

The University of Arizona is seeking a part-time Costume Shop Stitcher for the School of Theatre, Film & Television in Tucson. You will support the costume shop manager, assist designers in fittings, and help construct, alter, and maintain costumes for productions.

Working 20 hours per week during the 9-month academic year, you will supervise student workers and ensure timelines are met. This role offers comprehensive benefits and a collaborative learning environment.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent required.
• Minimum of 5 years of relevant costuming experience.
• Ability to sew, alter, maintain costumes and read patterns.
• Experience guiding student workers preferred.

Responsibilities

• Support shop manager and designers in fittings and alterations.
• Sew, construct, maintain, and repair costumes.
• Ensure costumes are cleaned, repaired, and stored between productions.
• Organize and maintain the costume shop, including inventory management of fabrics, patterns, and other supplies.
• Assist with budgeting and ordering of materials as needed.
• Assist with training and mentoring students in costume and garment construction and maintenance.

Join the School of Theatre, Film & Television as a Costume Shop Stitcher and play an essential role in creating, altering, and maintaining costumes for productions. Working alongside the Costume Shop Manager, you will construct garments, support production needs, and provide guidance to student workers while ensuring costumes are completed to the highest standard and within established timelines.

This is a 9-month academic year position with evening and weekend work as needed to meet production schedules.

Duties & Responsibilities

• Support costume shop manager and costume designers in fittings and garment alterations.
• Sew, construct, maintain, and repair costumes for productions.
• Ensure costumes are cleaned, repaired, and stored properly between productions.
• Assist in organizing and maintaining the costume shop, including inventory management of fabrics, patterns, and other supplies.
• Assist with budgeting and ordering of materials as needed.
• Assist with training and mentoring students in costume and garment construction and maintenance.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSAs)

• Skilled in using various sewing machines and hand‑sewing techniques.
• Knowledge of different types of stitches, seams, and hems.
• Ability to read and interpret sewing patterns, which involves understanding symbols, measurements, and construction methods.
• Familiarity with different types of fabrics and knowledge of their properties and how they behave during sewing.
• Ability to take accurate measurements and fitting garments to ensure they meet the desired specifications.

Physical Requirements

• The person will have to stand for extended periods, but can sit as needed.
• Ability to transport/move costumes and supplies weighing up to 50 lbs. Will be able to use a "rack" to move the costumes.
• Manual dexterity for detailed sewing tasks.

Minimum Qualifications

• High school diploma or high school diploma equivalency is required.
• Minimum of 5 years of relevant experience, or equivalent combination of education and work experience.

Preferred Qualifications

• Degree or certification in Costume Design, Fashion Design, Theatre Arts, or a related field is preferred.
• Experience in altering and repairing garments, which requires a good eye for detail and the ability to make adjustments while maintaining the garments' integrity.
• Experience in costume construction and alteration, preferably in a theatrical or educational setting.
