Job summary

SE Alaska Lands Trust (SEALT) seeks a Stewardship Specialist or Manager to oversee stewardship of 44 conservation properties across Southeast Alaska. The role includes organizing annual obligations, site visits, reporting, and property maintenance, with 70% office/remote and 30% fieldwork.

Qualifications

• Degree and 3 years of experience OR 6+ years of experience in natural sciences, land management, environmental protection, park/trail maintenance, forestry, surveying, or outdoor recreation and education.

Responsibilities

• Conduct field monitoring and documentation of SEALT conservation properties.
• Complete detailed, accurate, and timely annual monitoring reports.
• Verify compliance with conservation easements, deed restrictions, baseline documentation reports, and management plans for each property.
• Document potential or real conservation easement violations or management issues, and work with staff and volunteers to resolve them.
• Maintain SEALT’s Volunteer Land Stewards program.
• Maintain positive relationships with landowners and neighbors.
• Perform or coordinate trail maintenance, trash removal, brush clearing, sign installation, invasive/native species management, and other property management tasks as needed.
• Maintain GIS-related data for SEALT, and produce maps using ArcGIS.
• Provide support to the Conservation Manager for creating and updating baseline documentation reports and management plans.
• Participate in field evaluations for potential new land conservation projects.
• Assist with community outreach, including presentations and outdoor events.
• Provide content for education/outreach (web, social media, newsletters).
• Attend quarterly Lands Committee meetings and occasional after-hours events.

Job description

The Stewardship Specialist or Manager is responsible for the stewardship of SEALT’s 44 conservation properties across Southeast Alaska. This team member will organize and execute SEALT’s annual stewardship obligations, including site visits to each property, timely reporting, and property maintenance. Additional projects are possible based on an applicant’s interests and skills.

Approximately 70% of the work will be in office/remote office conditions and 30% in the field or at community events. This position supervises a team of volunteers, may have supervision of another staff member depending on experience, and reports to the Executive Director.

Stewardship

Conduct field monitoring and documentation of SEALT conservation properties

Complete detailed, accurate, and timely annual monitoring reports

Verify compliance with conservation easements, deed restrictions, baseline documentation reports, and management plans for each property

Document any potential or real conservation easement violations or management issues, and work with staff and volunteers to resolve them

Qualifications

SEALT is hiring a stewardship professional at the Specialist or Manager level. A Specialist will have experience in field work and an understanding of property management. A Manager will also be capable of developing management plans and baseline documentation, as well as independently managing projects, volunteers, and a direct report staff member.

Requirements

Degree and 3 years of experience OR 6+ years of experience

in relevant fields such as: natural sciences - biology, geology,environmental science. etc.; property management/land management; environmental protection; park, trail, and/or facility maintenance; forestry; surveying; outdoor recreation and education.

Strong communication skills, with accuracy in reports.

Good trust-building and conflict resolution skills (for property violation resolutions where neighbors or trespassing community members need to be contacted).

Proficiency with software including ArcGIS and Microsoft Office.

Willingness to work occasional evenings or weekends for committee meetings or special events, scheduled in advance. Most committee meetings are on Zoom.

Ability to work outdoors in challenging weather, hike several miles, be comfortable in boats and small planes, navigate in the field with GPS, and carry up to 30lbs.

Preferred qualifications: background in land management, familiarity with Southeast Alaska habitats, supervisory experience, and project management skills.
