Job summary

Cooper Consolidated, LLC is seeking a supervisor to oversee stevedoring activities, directing loading and unloading of barges and vessels, while keeping safety and efficiency at the forefront.

The role requires strong leadership, safety awareness, and the ability to coordinate with vessel crews, operations, and customers. On-site position with regular long shifts and travel as needed.

Job description

This position oversees and directs staff performing stevedoring activities, such as unloading and loading of barges and vessels, and advises operations to ensure safe, efficient, and profitable operations.

Responsibilities
  • Participate in the company Safety Program and lead pre‑shift meetings.
  • Coach and guide staff on safety, ensuring compliance with OSHA, company safety, and environmental regulations.
  • Oversee and direct staff for all barge and vessel processes, including removal of barge covers, loading and unloading commodities, while remaining compliant with state and federal regulations.
  • Make independent decisions on various processes and procedures during the shift.
  • Lead, coach, and guide staff on customer service and operating costs.
  • Manage staff for barge and vessel loading/unloading safety procedures; assist in workload analysis and staff assignment.
  • Communicate with vessel officers and marine fleets to ensure loading/unloading efficiencies.
  • Update the Terminal Manager on operations status, including delays, production, safety infractions, or hazards.
  • Assist with managing inventory for equipment and supplies, ensuring adequate levels.
  • Oversee housekeeping duties in crane, on deck and load/unload areas.
  • Ensure accurate and timely completion of documentation and reports, including safety correspondence in Cooperwork, daily logs, and payroll time sheets.
  • Communicate with customers and third parties professionally.
  • Provide input to managers on staffing, training, employee corrective actions, pay raises, and performance expectations.
  • Manage equipment and labor expenses.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
  • Education: High school diploma or equivalent experience and training.
  • Experience: 5 years in stevedoring/marine industry; experience in management and customer relations.
  • Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
    • Knowledge of facility cost structures, mix and blend analysis, safety, efficiency, preventive maintenance, OSHA, EPA, and freight.
    • Strong knowledge of vessel stevedoring operations, vessel operations, and barge handling.
    • Basic math skills.
    • Effective interpersonal, oral and written communication skills; ability to interact with all levels.
    • Strong organizational, strategic planning, time management and multi-tasking skills; ability to remain flexible.
    • Strong leadership and planning skills.
    • Ability to work effectively independently or in a team environment.
    • Ability to use common sense to provide direction and assist others.
Physical Requirements
  • Lift, push, or pull up to 50 lbs frequently.
  • Climb, crouch, stoop, bend, and squat frequently.
  • Stand and walk continuously.
  • Balance continuously.
  • Kneel occasionally.
  • Walk safely on barge surfaces and around deep water.
  • Understand and communicate verbally, in person, and over two‑way radio.
  • Climb ladders and work at significant heights.
  • Work in confined spaces.
  • Work in high dust environments around grain and other bulk products.
  • Work outside in extreme weather conditions.
  • Work extended hours, weekends, holidays, and/or alternate shifts as needed.
Environmental Conditions
  • Work both inside and outside in heat/cold, wet/humid, and dry/arid conditions.
  • Frequent use of personal protective equipment.
  • Travel up to 20% for off‑site training or alternate locations.
