Job summary

Winona Health is seeking a Sterilization Technician to handle cleaning, decontamination, preparation, sterilization, and storage of instruments for operating rooms and departments. The role operates independently, adheres to safety standards, and reports equipment malfunctions to maintain efficient workflow.

The position includes day shift hours 6:30 am–3 pm with potential late stays, weekends every third, and holidays every third.

Qualifications

  • High School or Equivalent.
  • Graduate of a Sterilization or Central Supply/Service Technician Program.
  • Demonstrates proper operation and controls of all sterilization and/or cleaning equipment.
  • Basic computer skills: Word, Excel, Outlook, and Cerner.

Responsibilities

  • Maintains adequate sterile supplies within surgery departments and WH. Rotates stock and remakes outdated supplies.
  • Decontaminates, disinfects, inspects, prepares, assembles, packages, sterilizes, and stores instruments per standards.
  • Tracks data from equipment, biologic indicators, count sheets, cleaning, maintenance per instructions.
  • Assists staff with patient transport while ensuring safety.
  • Performs daily cleaning tasks in Sterile Processing and OR as requested.
  • Maintains organized, clean work area and serves as a resource for central processing functions.

Sterilization Technician
Operating Room
0.80 - 1.0 FTE, 64 - 80 Hours a Pay Period
Day Shift, Hours between 6:30 am – 3 pm (Possibility of Late Stay)
Weekends: Every Third Weekend
Holidays: Every Third Holiday
*Starting Pay Between $16.88 - $21.10 Based On Experience

Position Overview:

The Sterilization Technician is responsible for the cleaning, decontamination, inspection, preparation, assembly, packaging, sterilization, storage, tracking, distribution, and overall processing of supplies, instruments, and equipment used in the operating rooms and departments throughout Winona Health (WH). The Sterilization Technician works independently with little supervision. Operates all equipment used to clean, decontaminate/disinfect and/or sterilize items brought to the Sterile Processing Area for processing. Reports malfunctioning equipment immediately to maintain a safe environment and effective workflow.

  • Maintains adequate sterile supplies within the surgery departments and other areas within WH. Rotates stock for use before expiration and removes any outdated stock. Repackages outdated supplies per manufacturer’s instructions.
  • Decontaminates, disinfects, inspects, prepares, assembles, packages, sterilizes, and stores instruments and rays according to national standards. Supports other areas within Winona Health with sterilization services. Supports external agencies with sterilization services as contracted.
  • Tracks and records data from equipment (cycle parameters, ), biologic indicators, count sheets, cleaning, maintenance and graphs as determined through the manufacturer’s instructions, national standards, and WH policy/procedure.
  • Assists staff with transport of patients as requested, being constantly vigilant to the safety needs of patients and takes necessary precautions as warranted.
  • Performs daily cleaning tasks throughout the sterilization department and the operating room as requested.
  • Maintains an organized, orderly, and clean work area.
  • Serves as a resource to customers on all central processing functions.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
Skills and Experience:

Required:

  • High School or Equivalent
  • Graduate of a Sterilization or Central Supply/Service Technician Program
  • Demonstrates proper operation and controls of all the equipment used for sterilization and/or cleaning of surgical equipment/instruments
  • Basic computer skills: Word, Excel, Outlook, and Patient Information Database (Cerner)

Preferred:

  • Graduate of anapproved Certified Nursing Assistant program
