Sterile Processing Technician II Certified – Kaiser Permanente, Rancho Cordova, CA

Job Summary

Under direct/indirect supervision, follows approved infection control, quality assurance and departmental policies to collect, clean, decontaminate, disinfect, and sterilize surgical instruments, trays, packs, reusable medical devices, and patient care equipment for inpatient nursing and medical office departments. Inventory, restock, and distribute instruments, equipment, and supplies throughout the Medical Center. Works primarily in the Sterile Processing Department, preparing and assembling instruments and trays for the medical center and/or medical office building, and processes inpatient operating room instruments. May assist with departmental in‑services and training.

Responsibilities
  • Infection Control – Standard Precautions: adhere to hand washing, workflow patterns, sterility assurance, biological monitoring, and dress code.
  • Quality Assurance Monitoring: validate and maintain event‑related protocols, disinfection/sterilization parameters, inventory check sheets, and equipment monitoring.
  • Documentation: meet regulatory requirements for sterilization, high‑level disinfection, biological monitoring, and employee competencies; accurately document and maintain daily records.
  • Policies & Procedures: adhere to organizational and departmental policies.
  • Staff Development: participate in orientation, meetings, and competency programs; maintain current certification; assist in trainings.
  • Decontamination Skills: wear PPE; inspect, disassemble, sort, clean, and process reusable instrumentation; operate specialized cleaning equipment; follow manufacturer recommendations.
  • Instrumentation Assembly: identify, inspect, and assemble general and specialty instruments, power equipment, laser and endoscopic instruments per specifications.
  • Preparation & Packaging: select and prepare packaging materials for sterilization.
  • Principles of Sterilization: select appropriate method, maintain records, load/unload carts, verify parameters before distribution.
  • Equipment & Supply Management: collect, clean, check, distribute, and track patient care equipment; manage inventory; report malfunctioning equipment.
  • Workplace Safety: maintain safety awareness, comply with policies, take corrective actions for hazards, attend training.
  • Professionalism: demonstrate effective written and oral communication, teamwork, accountability, and adherence to schedules; support departmental computer programs.
  • Supervisory Responsibilities: none.
Basic Qualifications
  • One year experience in instrument processing.
  • Knowledge of medical terminology, reusable surgical instrumentation, power equipment, micro‑surgical instrumentation.
  • Proficiency with sterile processing equipment (washers, ultrasonic, steam, gas, chemical sterilizers).
  • Knowledge of patient care equipment cleaning (I.V. pumps, feeding pumps, pneumatic pumps, CPM machines, PCA, hypo/hyperthermia units).
  • Knowledge of sterilization monitoring, record keeping, and QA protocols.
  • Ability to read, comprehend, and execute complex instructions, correspondence, and memos.
  • Ability to write simple correspondence and present information in one‑on‑one and small group settings.
  • Effective oral and written communication skills with co‑workers and external customers.
  • Willingness to work in a Labor Management Partnership environment.
Education
  • High School Diploma or GED.
License, Certification, Registration
  • Certification Board for Sterile Processing and Distribution – Ambulatory Surgery Technician Certification OR Instrument Specialist Certificate OR Registered Central Service Technician Certificate OR Technician Certification.
  • Flex Endoscope Reprocessor Certificate OR Surgical Instrument Processor Certificate.

  • Departmentally related computer skills.
