Job summary

Beth Israel Lahey Health is seeking a Sterile Processing Technician II for the day shift to support the Brookline/Main campus operations. The role requires independent proficiency in core sterile processing tasks and certification upkeep.

You will decontaminate, inspect, and assemble instrument trays, while maintaining accurate documentation and coordinating coverage across facilities. A HS diploma and 1–3 years of related experience are required.

Qualifications

  • CRCST or CSPDT Certification via HSPA or CBSPD is required.
  • CIS Issued by HSPA preferred.
  • High School Graduate or Equivalent is required.
  • 1-3 years of work experience is required.

Responsibilities

  • Decontaminates surgical instruments according to manufacturer’s instructions or advised by the supervisor or manager. Will operate decontamination equipment.
  • Inspects instruments after decontamination ensuring all items are clean, intact, functional, and accounted for.
  • Assembles trays in a manner that ensures devise sterility as well as presenting a tray that is easy for the end user to access for use.
  • Interfaces with department tracking system for all functions of processing.
  • Packages or containerizes instruments sets according to manufacturer’s guidelines and standards.
  • Loads sterilizer carts in a way to ensure packaged items are not punctured or compromised, loads containers and wrapped goods as recommended.
  • Runs daily sterilizer tests on all sterilizers.
  • Operates sterilizer according to manufacturer’s instruction ensuring every load biological monitoring.
  • Documents all load contents, interfaces load to tracking system, loads cycle confirming correct parameter, monitors sterilizer to tracking system, records all pertinent information.
  • Unloads sterilizers ensuring items are not compromised and stores in correct location according to tracking system storage locations.
  • Responsible for coordinating and providing coverage at 1BP and Main campus, based on operational needs.

Job Description

Under the general guidance and direction of the CSPD Supervisor and CSPD Manager, the Sterile Processing Technician II utilizes advanced, certified-level skills to perform Sterile Processing functions as assigned. This role requires independent proficiency in all core responsibilities and includes assistance of shift trainees in real time.

Primary responsibilities include receiving instrumentation, sorting and decontaminating procedural items and instruments, inspecting and assembling instrument sets, determining appropriate sterilization methods and cycle selection, maintaining accurate documentation of all sterilization processes, and ensuring precise inventory assignment related to case-picking activities. The position requires maintaining active certification through a recognized national certifying body (CBSPD or HSPA) in accordance with their requirements.

Essentual Duties And Responsibilites (including But Not Limited To)

  • Interfaces with department tracking system for all functions of processing.
  • Packages or containerizes instruments sets according to manufacturer’s guidelines and standards.
  • Loads sterilizer carts in a way to ensure packaged items are not punctured or compromised, loads containers and wrapped goods as recommended.
  • Runs daily sterilizer tests on all sterilizers.
  • Operates sterilizer according to manufacturer’s instruction ensuring every load biological monitoring.
  • Documents all load contents, interfaces load to tracking system, loads cycle confirming correct parameter, monitors sterilizer to tracking system, records all pertinent information.
  • Unloads sterilizers ensuring items are not compromised and stores in correct location according to tracking system storage locations.
  • Responsible for coordinating and providing coverage at 1BP and Main campus, based on operational needs. Assignments are communicated through the departmental work schedule and leadership communications to ensure appropriate staffing levels and continuity of operations.

Physical Requirements

Requires frequent standing, walking, mobility throughout the work area, bending, twisting, turning/pivoting, reaching, handling, typing, writing, grasping, and precision work. Occasional squatting and overhead reaching are required. The position requires the ability to lift and carry up to 40 pounds routinely and up to 100 pounds occasionally. Work involves repetitive hand movements, manual dexterity, and the ability to safely move, transport, and position equipment, instrument trays, and supplies throughout the department.

Sensory Requirements

Requires visual acuity for both close and distance work, including the ability to inspect instruments, equipment, documentation, and work products for accuracy and quality. Requires color discrimination and the ability to distinguish visual details in varying work conditions. Must be able to communicate effectively with others, hear and understand verbal instructions in person and by telephone, and respond appropriately in a healthcare environment.

Cognitive Requirements

Requires the ability to understand and apply detailed instructions, exercise judgment, prioritize tasks, and perform work accurately in a fast-paced environment. Must be able to multitask, maintain attention to detail, follow established procedures, adhere to work schedules, and sustain a consistent workflow while meeting operational and quality standards.

Environment Conditions

Requires work in a sterile processing and healthcare environment with potential exposure to adverse environmental conditions. Duties may involve working independently, interacting with staff and customers, working in confined spaces, and navigating wet, slippery, or uneven surfaces. Operates department equipment including automated washers, cart washers, ultrasonic cleaners, sterilizers, and related processing equipment. May be exposed to dust, fumes, steam, chemicals, blood, and other bodily fluids associated with sterile processing operations. Appropriate personal protective equipment, including gloves, gowns, masks, and eye protection, must be worn in accordance with departmental and organizational safety standards.

Pay Range

$27.30 - $40.57

The pay range listed for this position is the base hourly wage range the organization reasonably and in good faith expects to pay for this position at this time. Actual compensation is determined based on several factors, that may include seniority, education, training, relevant experience, relevant certifications, geography of work location, job responsibilities, or other applicable factors permissible by law. Compensation may exceed the base hourly rate depending on shift differentials, call pay, premium pay, overtime pay, and other additional pay practices, as applicable to the position and in accordance with the law.
