Location: Lancaster General Health in Lancaster, PA

Schedule: Full time (40 hours per week), night shifts from 11pm-7:30am, weekend rotations (approximately once every 6 weekends, depending on staffing), weekend call (primarily voluntary but may be assigned on a rotating basis if no volunteers), occasional support in other SPD areas (Endo, Women & Babies).

Summary:

  1. The Sterile Processing Technician performs duties necessary for decontamination, cleaning, inspection, quality assurance, assembly, packaging, sterilization, storage, distribution, and documentation of surgical instrumentation and equipment according to established procedures (AAMI ANSI, IAHCSMM CDC, OSHA, AORN, and AST). This role supports Perioperative Services and other departments throughout Penn Medicine Lancaster General Health.
  2. Qualified individuals must be able to perform the following duties with or without reasonable accommodation:
  3. Clean, decontaminate, assemble, and sterilize all instrumentation and equipment following departmental policies, infection control standards, and regulations. Operate sterilization and decontamination equipment safely and efficiently. Inspect, assemble, and sterilize surgical instrumentation and other equipment.
  4. Monitor and report biological indicators and quality assurance verifications to ensure patient safety.
  5. Restock case carts with supplies, instrumentation, and equipment based on the surgical schedule, ensuring the use of unexpired products.
  6. Stage and deliver case carts, stocking carts, and equipment to correct locations.
  7. Maintain inventory levels, report missing or damaged instrumentation, and report malfunctions of SPD equipment.
  8. Serve as the initial contact for departmental inquiries, responding courteously and professionally.
  9. Maintain a clean and orderly work environment, including cleaning work areas at shift end.
  10. Participate in cross-training for surgical instrumentation and equipment.
  11. Support other SPD sites as needed and promote effective team relationships.
  12. Participate in department quality improvement initiatives.

Secondary duties include repairing loaner equipment, reporting equipment malfunctions, accurately using computer applications, following tracking and preference card procedures, attending in-services, participating in on-call duties, and other assigned tasks.

Responsibilities:

  • Minimum Qualifications:
  • High School diploma or GED required.
  • Basic computer skills.
  • Within 18 months of hire, must obtain certification from CRCST or CSPDT if hired after 12/28/2020.
  • Preferred Qualifications:
  • Healthcare or surgical services experience preferred, including surgical technologist certification or equivalent.
  • One year experience in surgical instrument processing, sterile processing, or patient care equipment.
  • Credentials:
  • Certified Registered Central Service Technician or Certified Surgical Technologist.
  • Education/Experience:
  • High School Diploma or GED required.
