POSITION SUMMARY:

Serves as an assistant to the Emergency Department (ED) under the direct supervision of the RN in providing patient care in the Emergency Department setting. The Emergency Department tech will augment and perform a variety of direct and indirect patient care duties to help meet the total needs of patients in the Emergency Department. Adheres to Nursing Policies and Procedures and Organizational Goals and Objectives.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

Qualified individuals must have the ability (with or without reasonable accommodation) to perform the following duties:

  1. Provides age-appropriate care for the patient population served, considering growth & developmental phase, age-related factors such as thermal regulation, nutrition, safety, and functional needs.
  2. Uses appropriate resources for patients with special needs, including language barriers, sensory problems, altered cognition, and cultural or religious needs.
  3. Assists with patient care by preparing patients for exams and treatments, including bringing patients into appropriate care areas and assisting with undressing or exposing areas for exam as per protocol.
  4. Integrates principles of infection control and prevention into practice.
  5. Stocks patient rooms with supplies and removes outdated items.
  6. Sets up equipment and procedure trays (using sterile and unsterile techniques) to assist physicians and PAs with procedures such as suturing, splinting, casting, and pelvic exams.
  7. Responds to Trauma, Stroke, and Code R activations, assisting with patient care.
  8. Bathers patients and assists with hygiene, changes incontinent patients promptly, and provides skin care.
  9. Empties bedpans, urinals, commodes, and assists patients to the bathroom.
  10. Distributes nourishments as scheduled.
  11. Measures and records intake and output.
  12. Positions patients correctly, supports torso and limbs, and transports patients via wheelchair or stretcher safely.
  13. Performs hourly rounds for patient safety and customer service, responds promptly to call lights.
  14. Assists visitors in finding patient rooms and resources, checking with RN as necessary.
  15. Properly collects and labels specimens for lab processing.
  16. Inventories patient belongings during admission, transfer, and discharge.
  17. Provides 1:1 supervision for patient safety and suicide precautions.
  18. Communicates clearly and courteously with all members of the healthcare team, following lines of authority.
  19. Keeps track of patient location, communicates updates to RN, healthcare providers, and family.
  20. Performs additional tasks such as 12 Lead EKGs, irrigations, screenings, wound care, pacemaker tests, ETOH testing, splinting, vital signs, cardiac monitoring, CPR support, among others, per policies and protocols.
SECONDARY FUNCTIONS:
  1. Serves as a preceptor and mentor for new employees.
  2. Assists patients with meals and feeding as needed.
  3. Performs other duties as assigned.
Job Requirements
MINIMUM REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
  • High School diploma or equivalent (GED).
  • Previous training or experience in a healthcare setting.
  • Basic computer skills for clinical documentation.
  • CPR certification.
  • ACT 73 - PA State Clearances.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Phlebotomy and EKG skills.
  • Experience in an acute care or skilled nursing facility, or student nurse with clinical experience.
  • Safe Patient Handling education.
