Location: Women's and Babies Hospital in Lancaster, PA

Schedule: Full time (40 hours per week), hours are from 3pm-11:30pm, with 2 holidays per year, on-call 2 weekend days per month.

Summary

  • Position Summary: Supports the Operating Room schedule by decontaminating, inspecting, assembling, packaging, and sterilizing surgical instrumentation. Ensures the finished surgical instrument set is assembled correctly for scheduled procedures and all instruments and supplies are dispatched accurately. Responsible for departmental goals, independent duties, and project tasks. Acts as a resource and pursues professional development.

Accountabilities

  • Operations: Cleans, decontaminates, inspects, assembles, packages, and sterilizes surgical instruments and linens; identifies repairs needed. Follows established priorities and schedules, navigates automated tracking systems, produces at least 15 instrumentation sets daily, and documents processing activities. Understands patient, faculty, and staff needs, and complies with HIPAA and JCAHO standards.
  • Technical Skills: Knowledge of disinfectants, chemical germicides, and sterilization procedures; references MSDS; assists in surgical specialties as needed.
  • Initiative: Demonstrates biological logins independently; utilizes downtime effectively.
  • Teaching & Preceptorship: Seeks supervision when needed; provides feedback and acts as a resource.
  • Professionalism: Articulates policies, promotes a positive work environment, adheres to policies, attends in-services, adapts to schedule changes, takes ownership, and accepts constructive criticism.
  • Communication & Leadership: Develops active communication skills, accepts feedback, demonstrates flexibility, and performs duties aligned with Penn Medicine values.

  • Minimum Qualifications: H.S. Diploma/GED; 0-2 years instrument processing experience; certification as a Central Processing Technician or CRCST within 18 months of hire.
