Job summary

Medical University of South Carolina is seeking a Sterile Processing Technician to support procedural areas across our healthcare network. The role involves receiving, cleaning, sterilizing and preparing instruments for use, and ensuring safety and quality across units.

Requirements include CRCST – HSPA or CBSPD certification and a minimum of two years of sterile processing experience. Internal exams and performance standards must be met for advancement to Sterile Processing III.

Qualifications

  • Successful completion of the department’s internal written and practical exam and meeting performance standards.

Responsibilities

  • Maintain adequate inventory for instrument and equipment assembly.
  • Perform decontamination and cleaning of all instrumentation per standards.
  • Prepare case carts and trays for decontamination and load into washers/sterilizers as prescribed.
  • Operate index washers, cart washers, ultrasonic cleaners and manual cleaning as prescribed.
  • Inspect instruments for cleanliness, function and integrity before assembly.
  • Select appropriate containers and packaging per instrument size.
  • Sterilize instruments and trays following policies and procedures.
  • Run tests on sterilizers and document parameter compliance.
  • Use chemicals safely with proper PPE and handling.

Job Description Summary

MUSC is seeking a Sterile Processing Technician to join our team in providing critical care to procedural areas across our healthcare enterprise. Sterile Processing Technicians ensure procedural equipment consistently meets the highest quality and safety standards, and is ready for use by all areas across the healthcare enterprise. This position receives and processes incoming supplies and equipment including performing cleaning and sterilizing duties, and is an integral part of the daily operation of all units.

Responsibilities
  • Maintain adequate inventory for assembly of instruments and equipment
  • Perform and participate in the decontamination and cleaning of all instrumentation received, which includes but is not limited to instrumentation and equipment received from all units according to established standards and procedures
  • Prepare case carts and trays for decontamination and load them into washer and/or sterilizer as prescribed procedure
  • Perform the operation of the index washers, cart washers, ultrasonic cleaners as well as manually cleaning instruments and equipment as prescribed by established standards and procedures
  • Inspect all instruments for cleanliness, proper function, and breakage by viewing the instruments before assembly
  • Use appropriate container, wrap or pouch according to the size of the instrument or equipment
  • Sterilize instruments and surgical trays by following prescribed policies and procedures
  • Know how to run tests on all sterilizers, monitor and document that all parameters have been met
  • Use chemicals in the appropriate fashion taking into consideration the intended use of chemical as well as chemical’s function: knowledge of appropriate PPE is also necessary
  • Participate in expediting the OR schedule by assisting the other members of the OR Team in obtaining the instruments/equipment necessary for the procedure in a timely manner; Assemble and distribute case carts accurately and in a timely manner
  • Ability to travel between sites as needed, based on departmental needs
Qualifications

High school diploma or GED, and certification through CRCST – HSPA (Healthcare Sterile Processing Association) or CBSPD (Certification Board for Sterile Processing and Distribution). Minimum of two (2) years of sterile processing experience, preferably in a hospital or surgical setting. Successful completion of the department’s internal written and practical exam, as well as meeting required performance and productivity standards, is required to attain and maintain Sterile Processing III status.
