Job summary

UCSF is seeking a Sterile Processing Technician to decontaminate, assemble, package, and distribute surgical instruments, implants, and equipment across the Medical Center and nursing units. The role requires flexibility to orient to all UCSF Medical Center locations and maintain accurate documentation.

Must have a high school credential or GED and SPD certification; candidates should be able to operate sterilizers, washers, ultrasonic cleaners, and basic computer systems.

  • SPD certification training from a recognized institution is required.
  • Basic knowledge of computer systems including Windows OS and keyboard/mouse operation.
  • Good communication and customer service skills are essential.
  • Ability to understand, speak, and write English to communicate with staff.

Responsibilities

  • Assemble and package surgical instrument sets following protocols and count sheets.
  • Decontaminate instrument sets and patient equipment per established procedures.
  • Dispense sterile supplies and maintain sterile inventory with logs and electronic systems.
  • Maintain documentation and records related to material dispensation and equipment maintenance.
  • Collaborate with sterile processing technicians and other departments to ensure smooth workflow.

Job description

Job Summary: Incumbent decontaminates, operationally checks, assembles, and distributes surgical instrumentation, implants, supplies, and equipment for the OR, Nursing Units, and Ancillary Departments. Incumbent maintains documentation related to these duties. Incumbent operates and maintains sterilization equipment, decontamination equipment, and computer systems related to these duties. This position requires the flexibility to orient and work at all UCSF Medical Center locations.

Key Responsibilities
  • 50%: Assemble and package surgical procedure instrument sets following protocols established by electronic count sheets, professional standards, and other documentation from a variety of surgical specialties under supervision. Operationally check instrumentation for functionality and cleanliness.
  • 20%: Decontaminate surgical procedure instrument sets following protocols established by electronic count sheets, professional standards, and other documentation from a variety of surgical specialties under supervision. Decontaminate and operationally check patient equipment for the OR and ancillary departments according to established protocols through the competent utilization of a variety of cleaners, disinfectants, and machinery. Maintain appropriate records of receipt and disinfection of key instruments and equipment.
  • 20%: Dispense sterile supplies to appropriate locations throughout the Medical Center. Maintain sterile inventory through par level maintenance, stock rotation, and quality assurance. Maintain documentation related to material dispensation including logs, schedules, and electronic systems.
  • 10%: Maintain timely and efficient process flows through communication with outside departments and sterile processing technicians in other assignments. Assist other Sterile Processing Technicians in the duties listed above.

  • General ability to operate machinery including sterilizers, washers and ultrasonic cleaners
  • The flexibility to orient and work at all UCSF Medical Center locations

  • Basic knowledge of computer systems including Windows OS, keyboard and mouse operation
  • Basic knowledge of medical terminology
  • Knowledge of standard precautions for safety and prevention of cross contamination
  • The ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing
  • The ability to understand, speak, and write English in order to communicate with nursing, technical, and medical staff
  • Ability to safely move heavy trays and equipment, lifting up to 50 pounds, and stand for prolonged periods of time
