Job Summary

Under the supervision of a Registered Nurse, a licensed independent practitioner or manager supervises and coordinates all aspects of the sterile processing function of medical/surgical supplies and equipment. This includes decontamination, assembly, sterile processing, sterile storage, and distribution. Monitors sterilization equipment, maintains a clean and safe environment, and ensures an adequate inventory of supplies. Assists in interviewing and hiring new employees as needed. Provides supervision and training to staff and new employees.

Requirements
  1. Licensure, Certification, or Registration:
    • Certification as a Registered Central Sterilization Technician (CRCST), Certified Sterile Processing and Distribution Technician (CSPDT), or Surgical Tech certification (CST, TS-C, or CORST).
  2. For continued employment:
    • Current CRCST, CSPDT, CST, TS-C, or CORST Certification.
  3. Experience REQUIRED:
    • Minimum of three (3) years sterile processing experience.
    • Previous experience with a personal computer.
  4. Experience PREFERRED:
    • One (1) year of supervisory, management, or leadership experience.
    • Previous work in an academic medical center environment.
  5. Education/training REQUIRED:
    • High school Diploma or equivalent.
    • Work experience may be considered in lieu of credentials with HR approval, specific to the role.
  6. Education/training PREFERRED:
    • Bachelor's Degree in Healthcare Management, Business Administration, or related field.
    • Completion of IAHCSMM curriculum.
  7. Independent actions include: Functioning under the direction of RN or practitioner, providing indirect patient care, emotional support, and problem solving per hospital policies. Seek advice from management on major activities impacting operations. Handle daily operational functions and communication with physicians, patients, staff, and departments.
  8. Additional responsibilities: Serve as liaison with main campus Central Sterile operation (ambulatory site only). May involve contact with medications and supplies.
  9. Supervisory responsibilities: Manage and evaluate personnel, coordinate staffing, ensure compliance with standards, and develop shift assignments.
  10. Additional position requirements: May include rotating shifts, working weekends and holidays. Schedule adjustments may occur based on operational needs.
  11. Physical requirements: Lifting 20-50 lbs., prolonged standing, bending, walking, climbing stairs or ladders. Mental skills include recall, reasoning, problem solving, hearing, speaking clearly, reading, and handling multiple priorities.
