Job Summary
The Sterile Processing Supervisor oversees the processing, handling, and storage of sterile instruments and equipment for all surgical procedures. They ensure safe, high‑quality sterilization and instrument readiness while supporting staffing, technology, and operational excellence.
Responsibilities
- Knowledge of instrumentation, equipment, and supply needs for all types of surgical procedures.
- Promote high levels of employee, patient, and physician satisfaction.
- Promote optimal patient outcomes while maintaining productivity standards.
- Demonstrate advanced knowledge and skills in instrument handling and sterilization.
- Perform delegated duties consistent with scope of practice and the overall plan for Swedish Medical Center.
- Follow and support SMC policy and procedures.
- Support SMC values and mission.
- Provide education on sterilization, instrumentation, and equipment.
- Oversee processing, handling, and storage of sterile instruments and equipment.
- Assemble surgical trays and supplies as needed.
- Operate all equipment in the sterile processing department and facility (GI lab, robotics, surgical orthopedics center, main OR, etc.).
- Assist in staff development, evaluations, and education.
- Exhibit ownership and ensure department needs are met even when not on duty.
- Work odd shifts or fill in with little or no notice as required.
- Perform other duties as assigned by supervisor.
Licensure & Certification
- Must hold IAHCSMM and/or CBSPD certification.
Education
- Graduation from an accredited high school or GED. Vocational/technical degree preferred.
Experience
- Minimum 2 years’ experience preferred in sterile processing or the operating room.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
- Understanding of health care from an organizational system perspective.
- Comprehensive knowledge of processes required in an SPD.
- Ability to plan and provide for the delivery of all SPD services.
- Ability to communicate with department managers and staff to maintain constructive relationships.
- Effective oral and written communication skills.
- Participation in counseling and guidance of personnel, including probationary and annual evaluations.
Supervision & Work Environment
- Minimal supervision; works independently using initiative.
- Collaborates and coordinates with the Director of Surgical Services and other department directors.
